Human special senses and their functions

In human, the five special senses are olfaction, gustation, equilibrium vision and hearing.

In other words, the five special senses are the tools used by humans in the perception of the

world. For instance, vision are used for seeing, hearing for audio and vibrations , smell for

smelling somatosensation for touch and tasting for identifying tastes . In other words, without the

five special senses, humans are unable to perceive the world in its different aspects. The five

special senses send signals to the brain about the environment of individuals (Aspinall et al. 55).

The brain interprets the signals and activates the relevant parts of the body to react based on

changes of the environment or the perception of factors in one’s environment. The five special

senses determine the operation of the body and without them human body would not be

functional in relations to its environment.

The main function of the first special sense; olfaction or smell is to enable one to identify

chemicals. The identification of chemicals occurs when the particle travel through the nose

enabling the memory to activate the part of the brain that enables one to identify the chemical

(Aspinall et al. 55). Once the chemical has been identified through the aid of the brain, the

relevant parts of the body react appropriately in response to the stimuli. For instance, if the

chemical is harmful to the body or has a bad smell, the brain will react by enabling one to block

the nostrils and also flee the area where the bad smell has been identified. The second special

sense is taste that enables one to identify how a substance put in the mouth tastes (Aspinall et al.
