P1 Outlines why children and young people may need to be looked after away from
their families.
In this task, I will be explaining why children or young people may need to be taken away
and looked after away from their families.
What is a looked after child? Means children who are accommodated by the local authority
as a result of a care order which can only be done by a court ruling, they are then placed in
foster care, residential care homes etc.
There are so many reasons why a child might need to be looked after by the government,
this includes examples like addiction problems may be the father or mother has addiction
problems, death of parents, the parent is ill or parent is dead .it can also be linked to the
child of the child has behavioural problems or disability (Autism, ADHD, etc) and the parents
are either not financially or emotionally capable to take care of the child.
In relation to children and young people the reason why they may need to be looked after by
the child services and government, examples include Abuse from parents, Neglect,
Addiction problems, financial instability, inability for the parents to care for them or give them
basic needs, food, clothing, shelter.
Furthermore, it is important to note that children and young people might also need to leave
their families because of problems related to them also and not because of their families.
For example, if a child is abused and is showing strange behavioural patterns, the child
might need to be taken away from the family for safety reasons.
Examples of child-related and parents related reasons on why a child might need to be
looked after include;
● Parents related reasons
Parental illness or parents incapable of taking care of their children.
They are various reasons on why children and young people get looked after, For example,
if both parents are unwell and unable to cope with taking care of the kids, in some cases the
parents get well and soon the situation improves, but for the main time that the parents are
unable to take care of them, the children might stay in foster care or with a foster family, the
length of the time the parent will stay ill will determine where they will be placed either a
foster family, care home etc
Family incapability to take care of their kids happens for different types of reasons, some
include loss of parents, financial instability to take care of the kids, extreme mental health
issues like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia might also hinder parents from taking care of their
children, Addiction problems, Addiction to drugs and alcohol might also lead the parents to
neglect and abuse their children, the kids will be will then be taken from their parents and be
looked after either temporarily or permanently, the situation will determine as every child's
and family’s situations is different.
Most of these situations lead to a child or young person being abused and neglected. When
the case is investigated and the family is seen as incapable the child or young person will be
taken away from their home and be looked after by the government.
Abuse /maltreatment
If in the actual family of the child or young person, they are being mistreated and abused and
it is proved, the child or young person will be taken away from their family to another place
where the government deems it safe for them to live.
Even while investigations are still going on, in some cases they are taken away from their
parents to ensure that they are safe.

A child who is also being abused will be highly likely to be taken from such a parent or
guardian and be looked after. And most children that come from abuse or have experienced
loss of parents, might also need special attention which includes therapy to help the trauma
caused in most cases the situation they experienced as it might cause some severe
behavioural and psychological issues if not taken seriously.

Mental health problems/ addiction:
If children or young people parent or guardian suffer from mental health issues like extreme
bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, it is highly likely that they will be generally physically,
emotionally, intellectually and socially unfit to take care of anyone, and might even cause
damage to the child or young person because they are not in their actual sane minds to
know exactly what they are doing.
So this is where a child or young person will have to be taken into care and away from the
parents since the parents have been diagnosed with mental issues that clearly states they
can’t take care of their kids, in some cases parents have to live in psychiatric homes also. So
the children or young person is then over to the government to ensure they have properly
looked after.
If parents also suffer from addiction problems which means there is a high chance of them
not being able to take care of their children and abusing and neglecting them. If investigated
and found out to be true, the kids will be taken away from their parents and be looked into
after by the government, In some cases, the parent might have turned a new leaf but it still
takes stages and government policies to ensure that they are fit and stable to take care of
their kids, before they are then given their kids back, in few cases tho.

Child-related reasons

● Disabilities :
Most common disabilities for children are
● Down syndrome,
● Cerebral palsy
● Autism
● ADHD
● Dyslexia etc ..,
If a child has a disability and it’s hard for the family to cope with it financially or the demands
of the child is hard to cope with it physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually.
The parents might give the child over to the government, maybe a short term or long term
respite will be provided according to the family needs.
If the family cannot financially support or provide for their disabled child specialised needs,
the government can look after the child, there are different ways and policies and procedures
in place and it might even be in a way where the family can still be actively involved in the
child's life.
Respite care is also a form in which disabled children are looked after and are cared , for
example in the case of a child whose family is overwhelmed and exhausted by the caring
responsibilities which can affect their health .The disabled children are then looked after
depending on the period of time agreed upon to relieve the family of stress .this will also be
useful for the child as entering their teenage years they want to feel a sense of
independence, change of environment and social living .
