An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
✔ Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
✔ You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
✔ This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
✔ Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
✔ You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.

✔ Write 300 - 500 words.



This is an attempt to evaluate the Cutting Edge Advanced Coursebook, through its content page
and the Unit 01 material, to help determine whether or not it’s useful for an advanced level class
in which I would be happy to teach the content from the coursebook.

On first glance of Unit 01, the book is pleasing to the eye. The use of colour and design layout adds
a youthful and vibrant addition to the overall feel of the content, allowing students to
independently work through the items in an appropriate and logical fashion if they choose too.

Furthermore, the material has been laid out in a coherent and structured manner allowing the
content to be easily understood and followed, demonstrated clearly in each topic featured in the
unit, where step by step instructions are clearly laid out for each exercise. This clear structure
provides an excellent opportunity for the teacher to copy or adapt the exercises into a typical PPP
lesson plan as seen in the TEFL Academy lesson notes in Unit 5 and Unit 7. With each unit always
starting with a warmer exercise or two, then target language is introduced followed by a more
controlled practice, then a freer practice and finally an activity to consolidate what has been learnt
in that topic.

On careful inspection, the material covers all necessary aspects of English language teaching,
carefully distributed throughout the various topics, from vocabulary to speaking practices. This can
be easily seen in the topic Globalisation which covers vocabulary and speaking practices whereas
the topic English in a changing world addresses listening and speaking skills.

It’s clear, many of the activities have been designed with interactive principles in mind, where
students are asked to either work in pairs or in groups. This is important for a number of reasons in
particular to cultivate the development of the 4 C’s: Creativity, Collaboration, Critical thinking and
Communication. (Bilsborough, 2015). You can find this clearly demonstrated in the English in a
changing world topic where exercise 1 and 2 ask for group and pair work. There are also
opportunities within each topic for students to revise and recycle language as they move through
the various exercises, such as exercise 4 in Globalisation.
