ECD 315: Curriculum Planning and Design for Early Learners

Thematic Unit

The Douglas School District incorporates the Common Core State Standards Initiative of

English Language Arts Standards into their classrooms. That is why when I became the new

teacher of the 1st grade class there, I began to incorporate those standards into my curriculum.

Once students reach the 1st grade, they should have somewhat of a greater understanding of how

to write a little and how to read a little, which are developmental milestones (Jaruszewicz, 2012),

that they have achieved prior to reaching first grade. These skills may not be perfect but with the

theme of The Giving Tree book as my lesson for the month of September, I believe I can really

help enhance each student’s language arts skills, fine motor and gross motor skills, STEM

Science focused skills, literacy skills, and social-emotional skills. Children in first grade are just

that, children, therefore, I believe they learn best through play. That is why I plan on ensuring

that my curriculum is creative, engaging and fun for all my students. Whether that be through

song, acting, coloring, or just exploring outside. I will research creative ways to keep my

students engaged. The philosophy of learning that I chose is based of the Reggio Emilia

curriculum. I believe this best fits my curriculum philosophy because it almost allows the

children to fully guide the curriculum. It bases the curriculum off the student’s interactions

(Jaruszewicz, 2012). I believe the only way I will fully know if my students are understanding

what I’m teaching concerning The Giving Tree and if they are getting the highest-quality

education is if I ask them. Therefore, as I am going through this lesson plan of the book, I will

have a checklist and a to-do list to make sure that we are hitting all our educational goals. This

will also keep the students on track, but for the most part the students will drive the lesson and I

will guide them.

, Alignment with Philosophy of Curriculum

My personal philosophy of curriculum and thematic unit of learning most closely aligns

with The Project Approach curriculum which allows teachers to guide their students through in-

depth learning on real-world topics. It allows the students to essentially have an active learning

environment that achieves the appropriate curriculum milestones for the teachers (The Project

Approach, 2014). Furthermore, the Project Approach’s curriculum focuses mostly on life & real-

world experiences. Although, The Giving Tree book is fictional, I believe this is still useful

because I can align my STEM (Science) lesson around it by teaching about the life of a tree, the

many different uses of trees, and how to give back to a tree by recycling or planting more trees.

The science portion of my STEM lesson plan that I will incorporate will be gardening. Although

gardening may seem simple and easy, it does take a lot of science too it & I believe incorporating

this into the class will not only benefit the students intellectually, but it will also benefit them

nutritionally. With that being said, incorporating the science portion into my concept map with

hands-on learning I will incorporate tree growth. Since my concept map originally is about the

book The Giving Tree I will have the students plant a tree, any kind that they want. From there

they will observe and document it’s growth and we will then do research on the different kinds of

trees and their growth as well. We could sort the trees into groups mathematically based off of

height, weight, or even by name. So, some students may have an oak tree, other students may

have a pecan tree. Those can be sorted into their own groups. Then they can further be sorted by

height or weight. Finally, the book and the Project Approach curriculum aligns with my

philosophy and thematic unit because it focuses on the whole child concept of teaching, where

the teacher’s responsibility is too also focus on physical, emotional, & social health of the

students.
