Performance Appraisal

For a company to decide the value and productivity of their employees they must perform

quarterly or yearly performance appraisals. A performance appraisal is an assessment of an

employee’s job performance based off core competencies required by the company and

competencies specific to the job function. The Human Resource department plays an important

role in the design and implementation of performance appraisals. They will act as a mediator

between leadership and the employee. This will help ensure that there is a smooth appraisal

process. Human Resource will design the entire appraisal process making sure that it is simple

and not time consuming. Human Resource will need to sit down with leadership and gather

information regarding the responsibilities that are assigned to each and every employee for them

to be able to create and design a rating system that is fairly based off the job description. The

Human Resource team will also make sure that all employees know that the reasoning behind a

performance appraisal is not to downgrade or insult anyone but it is a process in place to help

employees set realistic goals and expectations for themselves to work towards. It will give

leadership and the employee the opportunity to discuss areas of improvement that will help the

employee grow in their respective career. (Cappelli, Conyon, 2018) Human Resourse will also

work closely with leadership to make sure that the appraisals are done in a timely manner and

that deserving employees receive the benefits needed like a raise in pay. They will also be

responsible to making sure that all parties are satisfied with the appraisal process and that the

appraisal and all outcomes remain confidential.
