Completing a higher level of education is a great accomplishment and many employers
look for that on resumes, but there is a decrease in the desire to earn a college degree. There are
many factors as to why the desire to attend college has decreased over the years, the main
reason as to why is because of the cost of the universities. The focal point of this paper will be
to scholarly research and determine if allowing public universities to be free in the United
States would be beneficial. I will be presenting both sides of the argument for free universities
in the United States and determining the logical outcome as to whether they should be
considered free or not based on the information gathered from research. This paper will
examine the facts that
are in interest of free universities and facts that are not in support of free
universities.
Argument that Public Universities should not be free in the U.S.
There have been little to no articles about college being completely free of charge, but there
have been conversations about free tuition but the points that support public universities not
being free are as follows:
Premise 1: The track record of academics at community colleges are poor (Vedder,
2018).
Premise 2: The negative growth of the economy is not suited for free community
College (Vedder,2018).
, Premise 3: Occupational shortages will not be addressed (Norton,
2018). Conclusion: Public universities should not be free in the United
States.
Argument that Public Universities should be free in the U.S.
On the opposing side of the argument, colleges that are free for students to attend
would have many benefits. Below are a few examples:
Premise 1: Students can prioritize school as they would not have to work as many
hours to pay for tuition (Cubberley, 2015).
Premise 2: Students could complete 1-to-2-year certifications for free, putting them into
well- paying work (Cubberley, 2015).
Premise 3: Completing certifications would lead to landing jobs where certain employers
would pay for the remaining education (Cubberley, 2015).
Premise 4: Over 2 million veterans have received free college education (Dennon, 2021).
Premise 5: Free college tuition is already offered as apart of some programs in half of the United
States (Dennon, 2021).
Conclusion: Public universities should be free in the United States.
Analysis of the Arguments
Both arguments have well-supported premises. Although, both sides do contradict each other
as seen by the conclusions; the argument in support of free college has more premises than the
argument against free college. The reason that they may be is by researcher bias or plain bias,
