Completing a higher level of education is a great accomplishment and many employers

look for that on resumes, but there is a decrease in the desire to earn a college degree. There are

many factors as to why the desire to attend college has decreased over the years, the main

reason as to why is because of the cost of the universities. The focal point of this paper will be

to scholarly research and determine if allowing public universities to be free in the United States

would be beneficial. I will be presenting both sides of the argument for free universities in the

United States and determining the logical outcome as to whether they should be considered free

or not based on the information gathered from research.

Presentation of an Argument that Public Universities should not be free in the U.S.

Richard Vedder is a Professor at Ohio University who stated his stance on free college

in the United States. There has been little to no articles on colleges being completely free, there

is only the concept of free tuition, which I am not sure includes the housing and materials also

required for most college students. In the case of free tuition at community colleges, Professor

Vedder’s article is summarized as:

Premise 1: The track record of academics at community colleges are poor.

Premise 2: The negative growth of the economy is not suited for free community college.

Premise 3: It simply would not be fair to only grant free tuition to community college

students. Conclusion: Community colleges should not be considered free in the United States
