Identify different types of airside hazards and Risks (1.1 and 1.2)
Airside hazards: Is anything that has potential of harming or causing harm, damage or injury
in the airside area, which is the area beyond security checks and passport and customs
control in an airport terminal.
Airside risks: Is the probability the hazard will hurt us or take place in the airside area, which
is the area beyond security checks and passport and customs control in an airport terminal
which is also the industrial area where there are lots of hazards and high at risk.

Airside hazards and risks are as follows:
 Fatigue- Fatigue is a major hazard as it affects most aspects of a crew member’s
ability to do their job. It harms the workplace as you may feel tired to do your allocated
tasks, you may tend to forget your tasks, falling asleep at workplace where employees
won’t be able to respond to a hazard, inability to deal with stress because getting less
than seven to eight hours of sleep per night can have lasting effects on mood and
stress levels.

 Slips and trips- The tarmac is usually smooth, so when
wet or icy it could be slippery. Oil or small fuel spills could
make it equally slippery under good conditions and risk is it
can cause harm to the workers.

 FOD (Foreign Object Debris)- Foreign Object
Debris at airports includes any object found in an
inappropriate location that, as a result of being in
that location, can damage equipment or injure
people around. FOD includes a wide range of
material, including loose hardware, pavement
fragments, catering supplies, building materials,
rocks, sand, pieces of luggage, and even wildlife.
The three main areas that require specific
attention are:
o Runway FOD - this relates to various objects (fallen from aircraft or vehicles,
broken ground equipment, birds, etc.) that are present on a runway that may
adversely affect fast-moving aircraft (during take-off and landing). Runway FOD
has the greatest potential of causing damage.
o Taxiway/Apron FOD - while this type of FOD may seem less harmful than the
previous one, it should be noted that jet blast can easily move small objects onto
the runway.
o Maintenance FOD - this relates to various objects, such as tools, materials or
small parts) that are used in maintenance activities (e.g. aircraft maintenance,
construction works, etc.) and can cause damage to aircraft.
FOD can cause damage in several ways, the most notable being damaging aircraft
engines if ingested, cutting aircraft tyres, lodging in aircraft mechanisms preventing
them from operating properly, injuring people
after being propelled by a jet blast or prop wash.
A dramatic example of FOD damage is the loss of
the Air France Concorde, which struck FOD on the
runway during take-off from Paris Charles de
Gaulle Airport in 2000.

 Noise- Aircraft noise can damage the ear by the
sound of the engine. Aircraft noise is caused by
airflow around the aircraft fuselage and wings as
well as noise from different aircraft producing
different noise levels and different noise
frequencies and tones. You can minimise the risk by wearing ear protection. Other
measures can be taken to reduce noise from aircraft and airports. Noise barriers can be
established as walls shielding the residential areas close to airports from the noise.
Exposure to aircraft noise can lead to short-term responses such as sleep disturbance,
annoyance, and impairment of
learning in children, and long- term
exposure is associated with increased
risk of high blood pressure, heart
disease, heart attack, stroke,
dementia, and may contribute to long-
term mental health issues.

 Weather- On the ground, aircraft
may have to be deiced prior to
departure, sometimes having to be
