Lab 13 The Respiratory System BIO202L Student Name: Access Code (located on the lid of your lab kit): AC-53N9HLS Pre-Lab Questions ”1. Name two functions of the nasal cavity mucosa.” The nasal mucosa mediates immune responses to allergens and infectious particles that penetrate the nose. It assists in the prevention of allergens and pathogens entering the nasal cavity and spreading to other areas of the body, such as the lungs. ”2. Why is the trachea reinforced with cartilaginous rings? ” The trachea's cartilage rings strengthen the walls to hold the passageway open despite pressure changes that occur while breathing. When large pieces of food are swallowed, the open sections of these cartilage rings cause the esophagus to expand anteriorly. ”3. Describe the path a molecule of oxygen takes to get to body tissue, starting with the nares. ” The air is warmed and moistened when oxygen molecules from the atmosphere reach the nose or mouth. The oxygen molecule will then move down through the pharynx, past the epiglottis, into the larynx, through the vocal cords, and through the lungs. ”4. What is asthma? ” Asthma is a disease that causes the airways to narrow and swell, as well as generate excess mucus. This can make breathing difficult, resulting in coughing, whistling (wheezing) on exhalation, and shortness of breath.
