Unit 10

Caring for children and young people.

P1, P2, M1, M2 AND D1

P1: Outline why children and young people (CYP) may need to be looked after away from
their families.

There are many reasons to why children and young people may be taken away to be looked
after by others rather than their family members such as their parents.

If a child is taken away from their families and put in to care its especially important that the
council places them somewhere safe. When a child is taken away from the parents/ career it
is because a care order has been made.

What is a care order?

A care order is an order made by the court to take the child away from the care the child
was in previously due to many reasons such as neglect and physical abuse. As soon as the
court is made the local authority immediately has responsibility over the child. Therefore,
the local authority needs to make sure that the child has a place to stay and to provide the
child with the care that is needed as now they are responsible for the child.

https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/care-orders

I have listed below some reasons to why a care order needs to be taken place:

 Parents ill

If an individual’s parent who’s under 18 is ill and they don’t have the ability to look after
them then the individual will have no choice but to be moved elsewhere such as going to
foster care. Before any action is taken place, social services will first see if there are any
relatives that look after the child before taken the child to complete strangers. Its very
important that where ever the child’s placed that its in a safe environment where the child
is getting treated they way that the child should be treated.

 Physical abuse

If a child is being mistreated in his own home where physical abuse is constantly happening
such as the child is always bruised, and its being caused by those who are responsible of
taking care of the child. This then leads to the child being taken away and being placed in a
children’s home or in foster care as where the child was living before wasn’t the right

environment as the child was not being looked after properly. Its very important that the
right actions are taken place when dealing with cases where a child is being abused to the
extent where the child is feeling pain due to beatings.

 Parents are drug addicted.

If a child is under the care of someone that is unfit to look after them then social worker
who is working on the case is left with no choice but to take further action as the child is not
in a safe environment.

 Death in the family

If death occurs in a family household where a child lives and there’s no other family member
available to look after them then unfortunately the child will have to be placed in care.

 Neglect

Neglect means a lot and if a child is neglected it means that the child is not being treated
well. If a child is neglected it usually means that the child is not in a clean environment
which effects the child health. There are many more reasons to why a child is neglected
such as the child is not being fed, cleaned, or even suffering from emotional and physical
abuse that was caused by who is responsible, whose roof the child lives under.

There are lot reasons two why a child/ young person will be placed into care. I will be
speaking about two reasons why a child/ young person might be in care.

 If the child/ young person has a physical disability.

If the child/ young person has a physical disability their parents/ career might arrange them
to go into respite care because they just need a break as it might be overwhelming, tiring to
constantly look after someone that needs your help majority of the times.

 If the child/young person is incarcerated.

If the child/ young person has broken the law to the extent where they have to serve
sometime in prison sometimes their career/parents might not want to have responsibly
over them. This then leads to them going into care and they might even be placed with
foster career.
