DNP 801 Topic 3 DQ 1 After reviewing the "DNP Direct Practice Improvement Project Recommendations" PowerPoint, in addition to using the information you provided in your application to the GCU doctoral program, briefly describe a potential topic of interest for your DPI Project. How do you believe this project will contribute to the body of knowledge in your field? Since applying to GCU’s DNP program I have shifted gears completely from my initial topic of interest. Instead of improving stroke times, I have decided to focus on reducing sedation times for patients having a biopsy in radiology at Littleton Adventist Hospital in Littleton (LAH), Colorado. To achieve this, I would like to implement a nurse-driven scheduling system for pathology personal. It is well documented sedation should be administered by trained personal; however, personal administering the sedation is not the only factor which influences patient outcomes related to sedation (Caperelli-White & Urman). Sedation medications are not “immediately metabolized” (Caperelli-White & Urman, p. 422). Because of this it is important to limit sedation to only what is necessary. Myself, with the approval and support of my mentor, believe if we give the nursing staff the autonomy to schedule pathology personal we will reduce procedure times; therefore reduce sedation times for patients undergoing biopsies in the radiology department. The potential topic of interest for my Direct Project Improvement (DPI) is: In radiology patients having a biopsy, what is the effect of nurse driven scheduling for pathology attendance on decreased sedation times compared with organizational driven scheduling of pathology attendance within 4 weeks?
