Natuurlijke en synthetische materialen
Natuurlijke materialen: materialen die onbewerkt uit de natuur komen.
IJzer bestaat uit ijzererts en houtskool.
Grondstoffen zijn stoffen die je nodig hebt om materialen te maken die je niet direct
in de natuur kunt vinden.
Materialen die je niet direct in de natuur kan vinden noem je synthetische
materialen. Tegenwoordig wordt met de term synthetisch eigenlijk altijd kunststof of
plastic bedoeld.
Kunststoffen
Plastic oftewel kunststof wordt gemaakt uit de grondstof aardolie. Plastic is licht en
kan in alle kleuren gemaakt worden. Je kunt het later vallen zonder dat het breekt.
Het is een stuk goedkoper dan heel veel andere materialen. Er worden steeds
nieuwe kunststoffen ontwikkeld met nieuwe eigenschappen.
Bioplastics
Nadelen van plastic zijn dat het niet biologisch afbreekbaar is en dat er maar een
beperkte hoeveelheid aardolie beschikbaar is.
Onderzoek richt zich op 2 aspecten:
Biodegradeerbaar: het moet door bacteriën kunnen worden afgebroken.
Hernieuwbare grondstoffen: het moet gemaakt worden van grondstoffen die
niet opraken.
Polymelkzuur is een biodegradeerbaar plastic gemaakt van hernieuwbare
grondstoffen. Na drie maanden is er niks meer van het plastic te vinden.
Biologisch afbreekbaar plastic is vooral goed toepasbaar in de verpakkingsindustrie.
Een tuinstoel kun je beter van normaal plastic maken.
Materiaaleigenschappen
Welk materiaal je kiest hangt af van de eigenschappen van het materiaal.
Een hydrofoob materiaal is waterafstotend. Een hydrofiel materiaal laat water door
en absorbeert het.
