Activity 7
1. Give five examples of resource depletion that you observe in your daily life. Explain why you
consider as such. (15 points)

a. AIR POLLUTION
The reading material provided that, "Air quality affects many aspects of our environment, including its
visual qualities, vegetation, animals, soils, water quality, natural and artificial structures and human
health". Hence, if the quality of air is polluted, the environment and human health that which it affects
would be the ones taking the consequences of air pollution caused by human activities that were
carried out irresponsibly, including factory smokes, wildfires, open burning of garbage wastes,
emission of vehicles, and traffic congestion, just to name a few. These activities identified to be causes
of air pollution consequently results to depletion of resources. Trees and forest soils, for example,
receive huge damages from excessive acid levels found in lakes and streams led by air pollutants,
particularly, sulfur dioxide. Another pollutant called nitrogen dioxide is responsible for the reduction
of biodiversity among plants and threats to aquatic life. These can already be considered as
indications of resource depletion if we look at the negative effects brought by pollution of air.

b. DEFORESTATION
The loss of massive trees and forest lands, thereby removing the natural habitat of some animal and
plant species, were consequences people were willing to take in the name of human development--
that is, throough urbanization. Because a large number of acres of forest land were converted into
construction sites for establishing buildings and roads for the exchange of commodities,
deforestation has been the primary influencing factor that brought forth damages to our natural
ecosystems, to biodiversity, climate change, desertification, soil erosion, floodsc and the increase of
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

c. PLASTIC POLLUTION
Widely considered as a large-scale pollutant, plastics create many environmental problems that
greatly affect wildlife and their habitats as well as human populations around the world to the extent
that the improper disposal of plastic itself in addition to the illegal dumping of plastic wastes onto
almost every part of the vast ocean have threatened aquatic, wild, and human life. Most
environmental niches for plant and animal species, in mountains and the depths of the sea, have been
contaminated by plastic wastes generated on land as a result of improper disposal of garbage, where
plastics are mainly involved. Moreoover, plastic pollution undeniably led to the killing of thousands
of marine mammals every year since the middle of the 20th century, of which I find very disturbing
because these animals have suffered from suffocation, entanglement, and ingestion of plastics
because of our failure to consider our environmental responsibility.

d. DEPLETION OF WATER SUPPLY
Recently, we have been experiencing shortage of watter supply in our area, and it shows in that water
sources in Baguio City have reportedly entered a decline on February, 2021. At a global scale, the
impacts of the depletion of water supply can bring forth an economic decline as people or
communities fail to acquire enough water supply safe enough to drink, wash, and utilize for crops.
Humans are also more likely to end in death as a result of water, and inadequate sanitation-related
diseases such as diarrheal diseases and other water-borne illnesses because of the absence of safe
water supply.
