3.3 Justify your campaign for change
Presenting your case for action
I have chosen my campaign to be based on domestic abuse, which is a crime which goes
unreported and under-reported several times a day. From my research, I have found that 1
in 4 women will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime. This statistic is shocking, and
evidently shows how domestic abuse needs to have more awareness brought to it due to the
fact that many women may experience domestic abuse, and may not be able to identify it,
report it or know how to end it. Furthermore, it shows how we need to prepare women for
domestic abuse, and ensure that they know the signs of domestic abuse which may be able
to prevent them from experiencing it for a long time or not at all. Another statistic which is
shocking is the fact that three women a week die due to domestic abuse. This proves how
violent domestic abuse can be, and highlights how dangerous it can be to not report
domestic abuse. This proves how domestic abuse needs to have more awareness brought
to it as some women may suffer in silence, and the on-going nature of some domestic abuse
cases means that some women could be killed due to not reporting domestic abuse sooner.
Another statistic which is shocking is the age group which is most likely to get domestically
abused is those under 25. This evidently shows how domestic abuse needs to be brought
into more awareness as younger people may be more susceptible to encountering domestic
abuse. The impact of this campaign will be to highlight the dangers of domestic abuse and to
educate those who may be vulnerable, as this information will help those who might be
younger identify domestic abuse when they are older. Although it is more likely that women
get domestically abused when they are in the age bracket of under 25 year old, we also
need to take into consideration those who are older than 25. I have taken this into
consideration by making sure to include methods which will reach them and impact them
directly. I have done this by making advertisements on different social media platforms,
which ultimately have different target audiences. Facebook will be primarily to target over
25s, however will still be able to reach those who are under 25. This is due to the fact that
Facebook’s target audience is considered to be people aged between 25-34 being the
largest demographic who use Facebook. Alternatively, Instagram will be used to target those
under 25, as Instagram’s largest demographic is aged between 18-24 year olds. Thes
statistics lead to there being multiple consequences of domestic abuse. The consequences
of not reporting domestic abuse is the fact that some women may be stuck in their abuse
relationships, and may not be able to get put or escape them. Due to the fact that domestic
abuse is often hidden and happens in the home, it is likely that not many people will witness
domestic abuse as a result of not being able to witness it. This leads to domestic abuse
cases not being reported to police, and increases the risk of women dying or having health
issues due to being unable to report domestic abuse. Another consequence of domestic
abuse not being reported is the continued taboo and stigma which will carry on being
widespread about domestic abuse. Many people may still find domestic abuse to be a taboo
subject, and may not want to talk about it due to the fact that there is little media coverage of
domestic abuse cases, and it is often not thought about when in a relationship. This lead to
people not wanting to talk about domestic abuse as they view it as taboo, therefore by
raising awareness of domestic abuse, this may increase the likelihood of more victims being
able to speak out about their experiences without taboo or the stigma surrounding domestic
abuse.
