= Ubersetzungsvorschrift der Basensequenz der DNA (bzw. Nukleotidsequenz eines RNA-
Einzelstrangs) in die Aminosauresequenz der Polypeptidkette eines Proteins
Eigenschaften:
• universell (gilt fur alle Lebensformen)
• eindeutig (ein Triplett legt immer genau 1 Aminosaure fest)
• degeneriert (mehrere Tripletts bestimmen 1 Aminosaure;
→ von einem Triplett lasst sich somit auf eine bestimmte Aminosaure schließen)
• kommafrei (keine Leerstellen; Bei Basenverlust → Rasterverschiebungsmutation)
• nicht uberlappend (Tripletts werden hintereinander abgelesen; Ausnahme: bei Viren)
• redundant (=mehrfach; mehrere; die meisten Aminosauren werden von mehreren verschiedenen Codons
verschlusselt, die sich meist in der 3.Base unterscheiden)

Aminosauren ergeben die unendliche Vielfalt fur den Proteinaufbau
(Bsp.: Schon bei einer AS-Kette von 10 Aminosauren ergeben sich 10.240.000.000.000 unterschiedliche
Proteinmoglichkeiten)
→ Aminosauren sind redundant (außer Methionin und Tryptophan → nur 1 einziges Codon)
Lesen der Codesonne:
Leserichtung: vom 5' zum 3' Ende (5'-3'-Richtung) → also von innen nach außen
Startcodon: immer AUG → Met (Methionin) (→ immer erste Aminosaure einer Aminosaurekette)
Stoppcodon: UAG, UAA; UGA
