Vulva
- The term of female external genitalia
- The labia majora are hair bearing skin folds extending from anteriorly
the mons pubis
○ The fat tissue covering the pubic symphysis
- To posteriorly the perineal raphe
○ The midline of the perineum overlying the perineal body
- Labia minora
○ Lie between the labia majora as lips of soft skin
○ Anteriorly they split to cover the clitoris defining the prepuce
and frenulum of the clitoris
- Clitoris
○ The female equivalent of the penis which when stimulated
produces sexual pleasures
- Vestibule
○ The area enclosed by the labia minora that contains
§ External urethral orifice
§ Vaginal orifice
□ Guarded in the virgin by a thin mucosal fold called
the hymen
® Perforated to allow the egress of the menses
® Fenestrated to enable menstruation
- Bartholin's glands
○ Pair of lobulated mucus secreting glands deep to the posterior
parts of the labia majora
- Bulb of the vestibule
○ Anterior to the Bartholin's glands
○ Mass of erectile tissue equivalent to the bulb of the penis
Vagina
- Surrounds the cervix of the uterus and then passes anteroinferiorly
through the pelvic floor to open into the vestibule
- The cervix of uterus projects into the vagina in such a way that the
continuous gutter (fornix) surrounding the cervix is shallower
anteriorly
○ Fornix surrounded the projected cervix into the vagina
- Anterior wall
○ About 7.5cm
