In the film Moonlight, a young black male by the name of Chiron, grew up in Miami, Florida.
Chiron was a young male that was dealing with several socioeconomical disadvantages along
with child abuse and neglect. Chiron was exposed to poverty, living in a single parent
household, with limited income. Chiron’s mother was a night nurse that had an addiction
problem that led
her to lose her job in the future. Chiron’s mother was only able to afford a small townhouse
(with no hot running water), and her habit. In the film, they explored his childhood, he grew up
without a father, and one day Chiron met a man (a drug dealer) that took him as his

Chiron eventually realized that the man that saved him from being stuck in an abandoned
apartment was a drug dealer and he sold drugs to his mother. The drug dealer’s girlfriend played
the potential mother figure he needed in his life. He grew up not knowing what it was like
having a mom and dad together at dinner time. He loved the idea of being home with his step-in
parents (Juan and Theresa). Chiron dealt with being left alone for several hours at a time,
learning to take care of himself along with losing the potential father figure in his life. As Chiron
got older his problems at home were getting worser. As child, children were bullying him and

While Chiron was growing up, he often questioned his sexual orientation. Peers at school made
it difficult for him to accept his orientation. He was betrayed by his best friend, who helped him
realize his sexual orientation. Chiron was dealing with a lot on his own in silence, so as he went
, to school the next day, he arrived at school feeling better about his sexual preference and his
best friend was told to betray him and rough him up. Chiron went home to ice his face as he did

Chiron was angry so he decided to go back to the school to defend himself after the fight was
over, this led him to the juvenile court system as a teenager. While being locked up, Chiron
grew some more character for himself to never be taking advantage of again. While being
locked up, he became stronger than teenage years and His mom was sent to a rehab facility to
work on her drug problems in a positive light Due to drug infested environment that his mom
exposed him to, he decided to take the route of being a drug dealer as well, to hide his sexual

In our book, Cohen discussed “sociologist Sharon Hays described Ideology of what she calls
Intensive motherhood” Cohen, P. N. (2018). This Ideology describes the pressure of
motherhood to it’s finest. Society has set the bar high for parenting and if parents aren’t always
able to meet the ongoing expectation for parenting, this will make life difficult for parents to
adapt and will which cause them to experience poverty, unemployment, family disruptions (dad
being incarcerated, mom as an addict, etc.) Cohen, P. N. (2018). Social norms play a big factor
in parenting, I feel. This is what sets the tone of how your child will view their future, I believe.
As my husband was speaking to his therapist, they talked about the social norms of how he grew
up, he stated that his parents had alcohol around and so did his mother and father parents as well.
Generational cycles. This allowed him to have substance abuse issues while growing up. I do
believe that this also gives the child to choose how they want to proceed in life. While growing
up my father was substance abuser (alcohol and drugs) and he was incarcerated most of life, my
mom raised 3 girls by herself without her husband. By looking back at my past, I told myself, I
