Practices
Teachers who are socially and emotionally competent develop supportive relationships
with students to create activities that build on students' strengths and help students develop the
basic social and emotional skills necessary to participate in classrooms (Jennings & Greenbery,
2009). As an early childhood educator, I need to strengthen my skills to guide and mentor the
children to implement social interactions and conflict resolutions throughout the program. The
social-emotional competency I scored the highest in was self-management emotion regulation,
which was 15/16. As an ECE educator, I learned to focus on positive behavior and acknowledge
my students. When students are given praises, techniques, and strategies, other children want to
follow suit and be praised for positive social skills. Children are naturally people-pleasers, and
when they hear a student being honored, they try to do the same act for the same praise. As
children need assistance, I like to role model breathing techniques and offer materials that help
reduce stress.
I scored the lowest in responsible decision-making, which was 12/16. If I had planned for
social teaching practices, I would have scored higher when issues or concerns arise; there is a
time when I come up with the solution and implement rather than involve my students with
conflict resolution. I can be impatient and want an answer fast without thinking things through or
involving my students or colleagues in their thoughts on conflict resolution. I am an
