As a society we have a wide community of diversity and culture. I am from San
Diego, California, and all I can say is that there alone is such a diverse place to live. Being one
of the biggest border cities this place by itself has a diverse variety of culture, communities,
race, and ethnicities. For instance we do have a big community of Hispanics and Philippinos in
San Diego and whether they communicate verbally in their language it is essential for other
people to know and understand their culture. According to Bevan (2020), culture influences
almost every aspect of our lives. Culture influences how we dress, how we act, what and
when we eat, what and when we celebrate, how we raise and educate our children, and even
how we view life and death. It affects our concepts of time, whether we prefer direct or
indirect messages, and whether we view the world more as an individual or as a member of a
group. (Bevan, 2020, section 3.1, para 1).
It is important to be aware of culture when it comes to communicating with people that
might have a different background or lifestyle as yours. Being mindful and understandable
about their culture will not make them feel offended or like an outsider. Culture is a society’s
structure, and it is what makes them who they are (Bevan 2020, section 3.1 para 6). For
example the southern you go in California people won’t care about if you have an accent but the
northwest you go people do care and make fun of your accent and pronunciation of words.
Being bilingual is hard and people need to be aware of the difficulties that people from other
countries and cultures go through when it comes to communication.
