Week 3: Quality Improvement Education
rofessor and class,
I have been in the nursing field for some time. I do not remember learning about quality improvement,
safety was all I remember. We discussed safety, patient care and outcomes. We did not go over in detail
about how we can reach the outcome by evidenced based practice. I feel this is something that is very
important in nursing currently.
The book states that quality and safety education project is “the use of data to monitor patient outcomes
by care provided by using improvement methods to design and test changes to continuously improve
the quality and safety of health care systems” (Sherwood & Barnsteiner, 2012). Nurse’s need to have
awareness of quality and safety and understand evidence-based practice. This will also assist in the area
of advancing their critical thinking skills. By learning this method prior to graduation, they can look at
all the areas of safety, signs and symptoms, to determine a better outcome for their patient.
I feel a good example of quality improvement could be a confused patient. While we are looking as to
why they are confused, we need to consider their safety. The possible need for a sitter, bed alarms on,
wrap iv sites with kerlex to protect them, bed in low position, etc. By performing these tactics, we not
only are protecting the patient, but also using evidenced-based practice for a better outcome for the
patient.

improving outcomes. Ames, IA: Wiley-Blackwell.

In my prelicensure nursing education program, what did I learn about quality improvement in
nursing? I do not recall learning about quality improvement 30 years ago when I was in the
nursing program. The closest thing that I can think of is the standardized process we had for
writing out lengthy care plans.
How was quality improvement emphasized? I don’t believe that Quality Improvement (QI) was
a major factor in our nursing program. We were taught the basics in nursing and safety was
always a factor in our care for our patient’s.
What I would suggest being included in future education or orientation programs about the
important topic of quality improvement in nursing?
I find it very important that quality improvement is taught to all levels of nursing programs.
Even if only the basics are taught, “that would lead the nurses of the future to understand the
importance of Quality Improvement.” (CNF, 2018). Through high-quality care, our patients can
receive the best care available. Incorporating the QI process into the basic nursing program
would help the new nurses understand not only what they learned about body process, but also
about the safety surrounding our patient’s environment.
“Nurses in the United States are being informed and included in the process of QI.”
(Sherwood, & Barnsteiner, 2012). Nurses need to be provided the tools to measure the quality
of care that they provide, as well as the skills to incorporate a change that will ultimately bring
about change for nurses of the future.
