In the selected article, the authors describe Fink and co-authors review of the nurses’ ability to
evaluate and distinguish the differences of dementia, delirium superimposed on dementia (DSD)
and hypoactive dementia in patients. I felt the author strongly outlined all the major aspects of
the study by stating the population (29 nurses), purpose (can the nurses evaluate/differentiate
between the DSD, hyperactive and hypoactive delirium and dementia and measure
geropsychiatric knowledge), Intervention (tested knowledge using Mary Starke Harper Aging
Knowledge Exam- MSHAKE), Comparison (previous, unevaluated knowledge of diagnosis and
treatment plan), and outcome (determining if nurses could recognize/identify each condition).
