Week 4 Discussion

Identify your specialty area of professional practice. Select a nursing theory from the list of specialty track specific
theories provided in the lesson plan or one of your own findings. Address the following: (1) briefly identify concepts of
the nursing metaparadigm (remember the selected theory may not include all four concepts); (2) provide an example
how the theory could be used to improve or evaluate the quality of practice in your specific setting.

My current intended specialty track is Family Nurse Practitioner. One nursing theory I find to be applicable to this track is
the Synergy Model for Patient Care. The Synergy Model emphasizes the importance of alignment between patient needs
and nurse competencies in achieving optimal outcomes and nurse satisfaction (AACN, 2018). The Synergy Model explains
eight patients characteristics applicable in all practice settings which describe the universal patient functions and needs:
stability, complexity, predictability, resilience, vulnerability, participation in decision making, participations in care, and
resources availability (Gralton and Brett, 2012). Patients and family are evaluated for each of these characteristics. The
eight nursing competencies essential for nursing practice include: clinical judgment, advocacy and moral agency, caring
practices, facilitation of learning, collaboration, systems thinking, response to diversity and clinical inquiry (Gralton and
Brett, 2012). With reference to the eight patient characteristic and eight nursing competencies, it is easy to identify how
all four concepts to nursing paradigm are incorporated. The person is addressed in the nursing competencies as this
concept focuses how the nursing care requires critical thinking, reflection and action (McEwen & Wills, 2014). Nursing is
the most highlighted concept in the Synergy Model. With the Synergy model putting a strong emphasis nursing
competencies, the nursing concept focuses on nursing functioning autonomously and empowering the patients though
caring partnerships (McEwen & Wills, 2014). Health has the same level of importance in the Synergy Model as nursing.
With the concept of health focusing on the unity and harmony of the mind, body and soul (McEwen & Wills, 2014); the
characteristics of the patient and nursing companies in this model highlight health. Although the Synergy Model does not
seem to address Environment directly, the implementation of the Synergy Model supported by Gralton and Brett (2012)
demonstrates how important the environment is to implement is model. As the environment is not limited to the
conditions and circumstances, it also included the internal and external factors influences that surround the client
(McEwen & Wills, 2014). One reason I think the Synergy Model can be incorporated into the Family Nurse Practitioner
specialty is because it every character regarding the patient can be assessed and reported in a nursing hand off and
characteristics regarding nursing competencies can be evaluated by a leader. This provides for consistency in staff and
focus on patient aspects that encompass the whole patient. It also allows for care to be subjective and objective
providing enough room for qualitative and quantitative data collection when necessary. Gralton and Brett (2012) study of
Synergy Implantation provide models that can be used in this evaluation process.

Tina Response:
Hi Tina, I also did the synergy model this week. I found your post very interesting because I enjoyed seeing how we
compared and contrasted in our viewpoints to explain how the Synergy Model includes all four domains of the nursing
metaparadigm. I noticed this model is found to be extremely applicable in the critical care setting. I agree that this
model’s usefulness is based on the individual making the relationship of the nurse and the person the center. With that
said, I see how the emphasis on nursing competencies being driven by patient care can make each patients plan of
treatment different. I also noticed that for environment, your setting for application was the critical care setting. I found
environment to be the hardest applicable domain of the nursing metaparadigm. Did you find this application to be
difficult, also? I would like to believe it was hard to apply because it is so general and things with more of a focus are
