Roles in Advanced Practice Nursing
Advanced practice nursing (APN) is a master’s degree nursing education to have the

ability to diagnose and treat illnesses. APN education increases clinical knowledge and skills to

treat the patient as a whole. I will be discussing four APN roles, education, role transitions, and

work environment for each role. Transitioning from registered nurse (RN) to certified nurse

practitioner (CNP) can be a very stressful and exciting process. The change from having the

experience of an RN for the beginning stages of a CNP is a huge adjustment. This assignment is

to research four APN roles and which role I am choosing to advance my career. I will be

explaining why I am choosing the CNP track with rationale, my plan for clinical practice, and

discuss the role transition from Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) to CNP.

Four APN Roles

I will be discussing the education, role and work environment for each of the four APN

roles. The roles are certified nurse practitioner (CNP), clinical nurse specialist (CNS), certified

registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), and certified nurse midwife (CNM). Many registered

nurses (RN) advance their education and careers in order to have more freedom. “There is just

such a need for this profession because of the Affordable Care Act” (Brusie, 2019 need page

number).

Certified nurse practitioner (CNP) is a master’s degree nurse in many different aspects of

nursing. They can treat chronic and acute diseases in different types of areas of practice. CNPs

start an initial assessment with history, then continue with the comprehensive care of patients.

CNPs will spend most their time assessing, diagnosing, treatment, educating and providing

support to patients and families. The increased freedom allows them to be independent

practitioners. They can have their own clinics, prescribe medications and order tests. CNPs
