Haleema Anwar R022 TASK 1-4 1

A guide to communication methods used at a Diamond Wood Academy.

Introduction
Welcome to the Diamond Wood Academy guide, in this we will cover the following:
 Non-Verbal communication,
 Verbal communication,
 Facials Expression,
 Body Languages,
 Gestures,
 Letters,
 And Specialist Communication.

These will ensure you can provide early year education and care for children who are generally
between the ages of 3 and 5 in safe and caring manner. Finding a high-quality early year’s
nursery is important for parents because they want to ensure that their child’s needs are being
met physically, emotionally, intellectually, and socially so they reach their full potential. They
want their child to be in a safe secure environment, and which meets their child’s individual
needs. For many parents this can be quite a perplexing task as the child may have difficulties
(such as, language difficulties in understanding what others may say, hearing loss, and learning
disability).

Communication -Communication is significant in the Diamond Wood Academy; effective
communication creates positive outcomes which makes everyone concerned feel valued. It
helps meet individual communication needs, goals, targets, and vision of the setting. Also, every
teacher comes across a range of children daily, which requires different types of communication
for specific reasons. Some people might be better at communicating than others, therefore
training should be provided. Communication is an effective way two individuals interact with one
and another. This can be done in many ways such as nonverbal, written communication, emails,
multi- media, body language, listening and verbal communication, having these skills in life is
very important. Effective communications allow both parents and teachers to understand
significant information about the children in the nursery. This builds a good bond with the staff
and the child and family. Communication is important in all early years’ settings, as it creates
and develops positive relationships between practitioners, parents, children, other professions,
and agencies. All involved in looking after young children. Diamond Wood Academy has
enforced good communication skills by ensuring every child has got a chance to speak. If you
are not able to communicate to someone in the correct manner you might come through as
intimidating and someone might not want to communicate with you if you don’t come through a
manner that’s expected. For a teacher communicating with children, you must come through in
a nice and polite manner, helping them and trying to understand. It may be difficult to
communicate at first as children at nursery are not fluent in English however you need to be
patient and try to understand them.

What is a one way and two-way communication? At Diamond Wood Academy one-way
communication is when information is transferred from the teacher to the parents. The teachers
don't have a chance to give any type of feedbacks to the teacher. The two-way communication
is where the teacher transfers information to the parents, and the parents send a response back
to confirm they have received it. Both one way and two-way communication are important in
Diamond Wood Academy, because they both have their own advantages for an example one-
way communication has the advantage of allowing the teacher to control the messages without
delaying anything, also this is quite fast and cost effective. An advantage for two-way
communication would be that it is easier to cooperate, and it would be easier to share ideas and
opinions, this would also be easier to solve problems quicker by interacting with one another. In
Diamond Wood Academy one-way communication can be used when sending letters home to
inform that there are holidays coming soon. Two-way communication can be used in Diamond
Wood Academy when parents/ carers are called in to have a meeting, about their child, both
parent and teacher will have the chance to communicate and give fee back to each other.

Verbal communication At the Diamond Wood Academy verbal communication is effective
because it allows people to communicate through two- way communication. Verbal
communication is the use of words and sounds to express yourself, verbal communications is
an oral communication, and this is done through spoken words. Verbal communication is used
to exchange ideas/information/opinions with people. This could also be effective at the Diamond
Wood Academy because it will allow the children to talk with the nursery nursey easily and this
will allow the children to understand efficiently and effectively. The use of verbal communication
is effective because when a child at the Diamond Wood Academy has a query, they can ask to
clarify, this allows the communication to be effective, however the downside to this could be that
the children that are quiet and shy won't be as confident to ask. Another example of effective
communication in the nursery would be when a child is explaining the reason, they don’t
understand their homework, they will have to express themselves, and explain through verbal
communication. At Diamond Wood Academy, the teacher tries engaging the class by having
discussions and little debate activities are taken place, this promotes good education, but this
can be bad because the children that are shy will not participate, and they won't engage with it.

Clarity- Clarity in Diamond Wood Academy is when talking clearly for example talking slowly or
taking breaks when talking, teachers at Diamond Wood Academy could do this when the
teacher gives information to another teacher about a child medications or condition, another
example of clarity being used in Diamond Wood Academy, could be when the teacher is trying
to explain a task to the child, they need to use clarity, because if the teacher talks fast the
children won’t be able to process the information however the negative thing about clarity is
some people don’t like the use of it because sometimes it may feel patronizing, however for
early years children it is effective because it allows the child to maintain focused without getting
confused. A lack of clarity may cause information to be misinterpreted so if some important
information needs to be communicated it is a key technique to consider because it will create a
better understanding of the information communicated. For example, if there is a meeting
between a parent and a teacher it is essential that clarity is used because it will mean that the
parent and the teacher will both understand what has been said.

Tone - At Diamond Wood Academy tone is used to express the speaker’s feelings or their
thoughts to the person receiving the information. Tone isn’t about the context of the
communication instead it is how it is being communicated. The use of the right tone can be
affected by the noise in the background. An example of tone being used at Diamond Wood
Academy is if a child has done something wrong the teacher may need to use a harsher tone on
them, to show them they are doing something wrong. This is beneficial because then the child
will understand that the actions, they have taken are incorrect. This is effective because it when
the teacher uses different tones it allows the child to understand the teacher’s emotions, for
example if a teacher shouts the children will know the teacher is angry. Another reason why the
use of technique of tone is effective at Diamond Wood Academy is because it allows the
receiver to understand the emotions behind the communication. Tone is an essential aspect to
communicating at Diamond Wood Academy because it is how loud or quiet you are talking,
when you are working in a nursery it is significant that you speak loud or quiet according the
environment. When giving a set off instructions to a child you may need to talk louder so that the
children understand, you may also have to emphasis on certain parts of the instructions, for
example if you are telling a child to make sure they wash their hands, you will emphasis on the
‘make sure.’ Teacher uses high pitch tone, to declare that they have a higher status in the class.
A negative use of tone could be using a harsher tone at a time when a child is upset, another
negative impact could be if the teacher is shouting at a child, the child may get scared, or if the
teacher is talking with a low tone the child won't take the teacher as serious

Pace When a teacher at Diamond Wood Academy is talking to a child and processing essential
information the teacher may have to speak slowly, so the child can understand. If the teacher
does not do this then the child may miss information and not understand and the child may lose
concentration and the child may do something harmful, so for example if the teacher is
explaining to the child how to hold a scissor safely, and if the child misinterprets this and misses
the significant information, the child may put themselves in danger, and might hold the scissors
the wrong way (facing upwards). Pace is also important when talking to parents/carers, by
communicating effectively, parents/carers will develop positive relationship with the staff. The
negative effect about the pace of a teacher at Diamond Wood Academy is talking too slow to
the children as is it could feel patronizing and humiliating towards the child, another example
would be if the teacher at Diamond Wood Academy is speaking too fast then the child won't
have time to listen and incorporate what has been said. Another disadvantage for pace is, if a
teacher or child has a different accent, and they are talking too fast, it may affect the
communication because they will not understand each other. At Diamond Wood Academy, Pace
is important for the children because it conveys the emotions and it also makes the teachers
message understandable.

Empathy -At Diamond Wood Academy Empathy is the use of tone to show sympathy to the
children. At Diamond Wood Academy empathy is the teachers have the ability to understand
information whereas others may not be able to understand it as well ,also it is when teacher at
Diamond Wood Academy put themselves in someone else’s shoes and you see things from a
different perspective and may be able to feel the children's emotions a different way this is

important because it helps us understand how the child is feeling however this may be different
for teachers because they might have not experienced problems like this an example of
empathy used in Diamond Wood Academy is if a child has hurt themselves a teacher would use
empathy to show sympathy towards the child. When showing empathy, teachers at the
Diamond Wood Academy understand and share feeling with another, in a nursery if a child is
having a one-to-one discussion with a teacher, about their hobbies and interests, the teacher
will have to show interest, for the child to acknowledge that the teacher cares about their
interest and the teacher supports their hobbies the teacher might engage with it and carry a
conversation on. The disadvantages of empathy at Diamond wood Academy could be teachers
could feel as if all the weight of the pain is getting to them, teachers may also feel as if they
aren't trying their best to help.

Paraverbal Skills -At Diamond Wood Academy, Paraverbal skills refer to the way your tone is
when communicating, and our emotions, facial expressions, and eye contact, and pace.
Paraverbal skills is the power of the pitch, and the strength of the speed. Children will portray
paraverbal skills through facial expressions, for example if a child has fallen, they will be upset,
there facial expressions will imply that they are upset and sad. An example of this used at
Diamond Wood Academy is when a child has achieved something and then the teacher may
congratulate them with excitement or happily, whereas if a child has drawn on the wall you
would change the tone of your voice by raising it and express your emotions by showing anger.
Another example at the Diamond Wood Academy would be if a child isn't engaging with the
lesson the teachers will motivate them, the use of tone would be incredibly positive, the use of
positive tone would make most children engage because they are spoken in a satisfactory
manner. However, the negatives of paraverbal skills at Diamond Wood Academy are if the
teacher or child does not use a combination of different skills, the messages might not be
understood, for example the teachers and children should use facial expressions, positive body
language and eye contact, Overall, the use of paraverbal skills is effective in the nursery
because the child will be able to understand how a teacher is reacting to their behavior.
Non-verbal -At Diamond Wood Academy, nonverbal communication is a process which
excludes verbal communication. Children or teachers that lack verbal skills, communicate in
many different forms and many ways effectively e.g., Makaton, BSL, this allows them to interact
with one and another when they need to. Non-verbal communication are signals such as body
language, gestures, facial expression, and eye contact which adds impact to the communication
process. Non-verbal communication can be effective at Diamond Wood Academy because it
allows children to increase the understanding of messages. In Diamond Wood Academy
nonverbal communication can be used, for example when the teacher has directed a student to
do their work and they have done it correct, the teacher could put their thumbs up to show the
student they are doing well At Diamond Wood Academy the advantages of nonverbal
communication is that it helps people that are deaf to communicate, however the disadvantages
at Diamond Wood Academy could be, the children might not understand the gestures, as
quickly as they would if the teachers actually spoke to them.

Facial expression - In Diamond Wood Academy facial expressions are linked to nonverbal
communication. when a child expresses his/her emotions they tend to make facial expressions
to show the way they are feeling. So, for example when a child is happy, they usually smile and
