NR 506 Week 7 Discussion
As a health policy professional leader, communicating with lay audiences is an
important skill in promoting the health of the community for master prepared registered
nurses. Develop a concise position statement reflecting the research findings and
recommendations by experts as they relate to workplace support for breast feeding
mothers, medical marijuana services in the community, genetic testing or applications of
stem cell research, transgender care, abortion, end-of-life care, or a community service
administered by Family Nurse Practitioners (if you pick this one be specific about the
type of community service the FNP would work in or manage).
There has been recent talk of the use of marijuana that it is becoming legal in many states. What
has caused this change you may ask? People are under a lot of stress which can surprisingly lead
to many chronic conditions. Therefore, people are turning to new alternatives.
I believe that as nurses we are given the up-close and personal view. We see on a daily basis
what patients are going through and are more easily able to understand. For example, I was
triaging a patient that came in the emergency department last week, complaining of chronic
abdominal pain due to Crohns disease. He openly said me, “I use marijuana to control the pain.
But I ran out and I can’t handle the break-through pain right now.” I asked him how the
marijuana was working for him. He smiled and said, “It works great! I can function normally for
a while when I’m on it.” I couldn’t judge him for that. According to Greenwell (2012), marijuana
exerts pain-relieving effects, which are maybe better or more effective than convectional
pharmaceuticals. He had found a way to solve his problem. As a nurse I am able to advocate for
his care both physically and emotionally. In this type of case, I would rally for a policy to be
made that would align with the healthcare benefits of marijuana in control chronic, break-
through pain. As a nurse, I have the knowledge and experience to make a decision and gather
more people who share this belief and opinion in order to make a policy that may serve all
parties in these type of circumstances.
