TV as Art
HUMN 303N Week 7 Discussion: TV as Art

Hello professor and classmates;
Media can be considered an art form as long as it conveys some sort of individual or
collective vision through the use of its characteristic devices. It is based on this
description that oi considers television as a form of art as well. The only problem in this
discussion arises from the fact that the television medium talks about other forms of
media. As such, we are unable to identify its particularities as it works at such subliminal
levels that we are immediately immersed in whatever the subject is and unable to pay
attention to the actual form in which it is presented (Martin & Jacobus, 2018).
The name of a TV show that perpetuates the idea of television as an art form is Andy
Warhol’s Fifteen Minutes. Andy Warhol himself was the director of the Fifteen Minutes
Television Series. I consider this program an accomplished art form, since it can capture
our undivided attention and deliver its messages intelligibly and in a rather authoritarian
fashion (Martin & Jacobus, 2018). If we are more interested in style than content, it is
also a pleasure to study the conventions of formal television, its stylistic devices and
how and when it decides to subvert them, especially how these changes according to
the variety of actual formats in which television manifests itself (Reed, 2012). This is a
very attractive medium to those who want to experiment with the relationships and ways
of manipulation between author and viewers and permits flexibility and explicitness that
the last generations of artists are very keen on carrying in their works.
Warhol’s artworks introduced a fascinating new form of artistic expression. In 1961, he
unveiled the concept of Pop Art and showcased a collection of paintings that focused on
mass-produced commercial goods (Brown, 2016). He was the first artist to use the
Amiga computers introduced in 1984 to digitally generate new art forms (Brown, 2016).
Warhol also tried his hand at sculpting, and even worked in television, hosting Andy
Warhol’s TV and Andy Warhol’s Fifteen Minutes on MTV.
Andy Warhol’s Fifteen Minutes show has inspired many people, including one Ms.
Cathy Naso who attended the 200 Dollar Bill concert. A statement extracted from her
remarks read “Andy has made me famous for fifteen minutes and I’ve come to realize
that fifteen minutes of fame is more than enough”. Her full sentiments can be obtained
on the website: Andy Warhol's Iconic 200 One Dollar Bills, (2009).
