DOLES, DARYL KYLE G.

ACTIVITY 9

1.Describe the context in which Rizal wrote Noli Me Tangere.
-When Jose Rizal was still studying medicine in Madrid in 1884, he began writing the first sections
of his novel Noli Me Tangere. After finishing his medical studies, Rizal continued to work on this
novel in Paris, France. In Berlin, Germany, Jose Rizal completed the novel's last sections. The
novel focused on the sufferings, mistreatment, and hardships endured by Filipinos, and linked their
tragic predicament to the unfair treatment received by Filipinos under the ruling of the Spaniards.

2. What do the characters Ibarra and Elías represent in the novel?
- For me, also thinking anout discussions when I was in highschool, they both represents Rizal and
many Filipinos. In which, they had shown their highest virtue of being a tru born Filipino, which
shows their integrity in the edge of any problems that had given to them

3. Is Tasio a figure to be admired? Why or why not?
- This would be different for many people. Personally, it would be a yes for me, though his part and
impact on novel’s society was low, his self esteem was admirable. I think of it as admirable as I
have the same traits as him, in which I was fond of thinking independently and I do not care what
others think of me, as I was just doing what makes me happy.

4. Compare and contrast Father Dámaso and Father Salví.
- Father Damaso was more aggressive and bulgar regarding in his actuations as priest, in which he
was seen as the most villain among the characters in the Noli me Tangere. With Father Salvi, he
was very hideous regarding on his intentions, in which his actions looks like he was lesser eveil, yet
upon the course of the novel, it turns out that he was the most evil among the characters.

5. What does the character of Captain Tiago say about colonialism?
- With captain Tiago’ s character, we can clearly see him as very successful in his character, but
beyond his success, in which with his arrogance, he cannot practice his integrity and loyalty among
his people. He was a picture of leaders willing to trade their people, in the exchange of moaney and
wealth.

6. Is Noli Me Tángere anti-Catholic or anti-religion? Why or why not?
- Though there had been issues regarding Noli me Tangere contents is against the church, it cannot
remove the fact that these events had been possibly happened in the past. Though not attacking any
religion, the Noli Me Tangere gad only shown the abuse of power of those that have higher
authority than the other, and this was a fact even up to this present time.
