Functionalists suggest ed. has 3 main functions:
Secondary Socialisation
Role allocation
Providing the necessary skills for the economy
(suggests that education contributes to the maintenance of society and provides opportunity for
upward social mobility, and meritocracy)
Neoliberalism and the New Right:
A conservative free market approach
Durkheim - Specialist skills:
Where in agrarian society people may have learnt a specific craft from their family, the nature of
industrial society means people must learn specialist skills to perform specific economic roles and
contribute to the complex industrial society based on a division of labour. This cooperation promotes
social solidarity and it is ed. that teaches individuals the specialist knowledge neccessary for each
individual to play their part in the social division of labour.
Durkheim - Secondary Socialisation:
E performs the role of secondary socialisation by teacing socail rules and how to abide by them
through rules and discipline. This means that norms and values are shared by broader society and it is
through these "social similarities" that social solidarity is achieved. e.g. history instils in children a
sense of shared heritage and a commitment to the wider social group.
