Streamlined Body Shapes
A streamlined shape is a body structure that helps overcome a force called
resistance that enables freedom of movement for animals to move easily and faster
in water. We can identify a streamlined body shape as they have narrow ends, and
they are broad in the middle. Streamlined body shape allows animals to swim
faster (Jailani, 2009). Examples of streamlined body shaped animals are dolphins
as a mammal, sharks as a fish and penguins as a bird. (Figure 1).

Aquatic animals like sharks and dolphins have streamlined bodies so they are able
to swim faster and quicker through water and there is less friction or pull inside the
water. Birds like penguins have streamlined bodies to help them while flying as it
reduces the resistance of drag in water and it also helps them under the water to
swim away from carnivores and avoid getting eaten.
The structure of streamlined shape animals is fusiform (tapered at both ends and
rounded). They are thin at the end of their body and thick at the middle (Figure 1).
Their head is bigger with a small beak and short neck while their body is
elongated.
The main morphology for streamlined shaped animals is their fusiform shape as
this helps reduce drags and control water flow over their body. Controlling water
