ENG2611 ASSIGNMENT 1 2022

, The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden back.

QUESTION 1
PART 1

-Summary

The theme of the poem is about a human’s last choices in his lifetime and how they will
examine the type of future that human will have which not fulfill his dream for
unexplored experiences or adventures.

The plot of the poem is different choices a person has to make in his life and when he
does make a choice, what impact does it have on his entire lifetime activities for
example, his dreams, career choices, family life etc. This determines whether his life will
be the way he expected it to be or it will depend on the choices he makes.

Lines 1-5
The speaker has come to a fork in a path in the wood. It’s fall and the leaves are turning
colors. He is unsure which way to go and wants to go in both ways. He is unable to
make a decision a for a while. The path that he decides to take is not as accurate as the
other worn and looks at it for a long time until it disappears out of his sight. The choice
that he is referring to in the poem could determine his way ahead which means the
future of his life. How this choice will leave an impact to his choices of before and what
kind of future he will have on the basis of his one choice.

Lines 6-12
Earlier the speaker was confused on which path to take and now he has made a
decision to take one path from the two. He analyzes the paths in ways such as “grassy”,
“I took the one less travelled by” which means it is not in use often. It could also mean
that this path which he has chosen is less in use then the other by his diction in the
poem. It could be that he wants to travel that specific path because he wants to know
