, What is the value of studying international relations from a theoretical perspective

Countries’ reactions to each other’s political, economic, social, and cultural conditions are
referred to as International Relations. Therefore, one of the fundamental values of studying
international relations from a theoretical perspective is to categorise sets of ideas involved in
the complex study of international relations. By organising a group of ideas into a theory, we
can better understand why something has occurred in international relations. There are five
international relations theories, however, the focus will specifically be placed on the theory of
realism and the value of studying realism.

International Relations theories provide us with different lenses through which to see the
world, allowing us to approach the world from different perspectives. International Relations
is today the study of the global state system from different scholarly perspectives (Jackson
and Sorensen, 2010:2). When we think about international relations, we should wonder if we
hope to make positive changes or if we can do only better understand complex problems that
people face (McGlinchey, 2017:8).

A set of tools called theories has been developed to explain and understand international
relations (Mingst and Arreguin, 2011:68). We must look at the history of these countries and
at the people in power, in order to comprehend why they refuse to meet international
demands (Mingst and Arreguin, 2011:67). Theories explain why these events occurred. We
can view the theory as an explanation of why we observe certain patterns of behaviour within
a domain of interest and a simplified picture of how those patterns developed. Understanding
international relations requires the study of theory. Within broader categories, such as
frameworks, we can find theories in International Relations. We can address factors vital to
our understanding of international relations by using these frameworks (Mingst and Arreguin,
2011:67). In international relations, there are a variety of theoretical approaches. There are
five theories: Realism, Liberalism, Marxism, Constructivism, and Feminism (Mingst and
Arreguin, 2011:68). These theoretical perspectives also examine the individual, state, and
international systems from different perspectives. These perspectives present varying
perspectives on whether the international system should change (Mingst and Arreguin,
2011:91). Realism is the most well-established theoretical perspective in International
Relations (Steans, Pettiford, Diez, and El-Anis, 2013:53).
