My name is Helen Walton and I am a nurse in New Mexico. Growing up on a small farm in rural
NM, there were not many opportunities for further education. I was fortunate to start school at a
vocational school and began my wait to be accepted into nursing school. Although I was ecstatic
to become an LPN, I had my sights on further education. After four years I was able to start a
unique type of educational program-long distance learning. As a student of Regents University of
New York, I mailed my papers, used clinical sites for clinical, and utilized the CLEP system to
challenge courses. It worked for my schedule, but I never thought it would catch on.
After working in community and mental health for 20 year of my career, I wanted to help
nursing students attain their goals. I continued my education at Excelsior Nursing College-
completing my MSN in NE. I loved teaching, but I missed being a nurse in the field. I began
working for the NM Department of Health as the Director of Nursing. I was focused on patients
whom were mentally ill, had traumatic brain injuries, and with the intellectually disabled. I came
to the realization that New Mexico has a shortage of psychiatric, mental health professionals.
Trying to attain mental health care for my patients was constantly a struggle. My patients were
suffering, and I could not help them. I recognized that I could help this crises. I began searching
for a program rich in tradition yet student focused.
Vision and Mission
I contacted Walden University over six months as I was searching for a reputable and proven
university with a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate program. I was
devastated when I was told that program was not offered yet. Although I continued my search for
a reputable university with a similar vision and goal as I, it was a challenge. I am thrilled to here
learning with each you. I am impressed by the support and tools offered and realize that this
learning forum is distinctively different (Walden University, 2011b). I am going to succeed and
be part of positive social change(Walden University, 2011b) .
Goal
My goal is to successfully complete my program of study and learn from my peers. I want to be a
prepared, professional Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I am going use my
academic career to fulfill a need in rural New Mexico. I would aim to modify the attitude
towards those with mental illness.
