Executive Summary: Nursing Roles
Due to the increasing complexity of health care, there is a greater demand in meeting
patient needs and preferences. Based on the Magnet survey from the American Nurses
Credentialing Center, St. Louis Medical Center (SLMC) needs to work on meeting patient needs
through enhancements of nursing roles. As a nurse executive at SLMC, proposition of creating
additional nursing roles is warranted to meet one of the magnet components which is the
exemplary professional practice. The purpose of this paper is to present recommendations,
supported by empirical evidence, to SLMC’s board of directors in creating nursing roles to meet
patient needs in the form of an executive summary.
Issue and Magnet Model Component
SLMC has seen an increased rate of hospital admissions and readmissions of elderly
patients with heart failure (Chamberlain college of nursing’s course resources, 2016). This is a
pressing issue that needs to be addressed as hospital readmissions account for more than $41
billion in expenses as of 2011 (Drugger, McBride, & Song, 2014). The Magnet model
component of exemplary professional practice can help guide SLMC in addressing this issue of
hospital readmissions by redefining the care delivery system of SLMC. This entails
implementing new nursing roles at SLMC such as nurse navigator, admission and discharge
nurse, and a staff without assigned territory (SWAT) nurse. Exemplary professional practice is
about forming a strong nursing practice and also the potential of what nursing practice can
achieve (Luzinski, 2012). Exemplary professional practice is about independent nurses sharing
clinical expertise with the interdisciplinary team in providing patient centered care.
