1.1. There are five important techniques used in the process of critical reading.
The 1st is a process over surveying the text as a whole, this allows the
reader to gain an overview of the content of the text or by finding all of the
key concepts of the texts. There are two main ways to survey a text. The
reader can skim read or scan. Skim reading is when the reader reads
though the whole text forcing on the overall main concepts and points.
Scanning a text is when the reader looks only at the key concepts and
specific words. The 2nd process is asking or setting questions for yourself
before you read through the text thoroughly. This guides the reader and
his/her thought process as they go through the text. Questions like: “why
am I reading this text?”, “what do I already know about the subject matter
of this text?”, “how does this text relate to me?”, “what information do I
need to take out of this text?”, “what is this text actually saying?”. Asking
questions like these aids in your reading changing from passive to active
by helping you actively think about the content of the texts while you are
thoroughly reading it. The 3rd process is simply actively reading the text.
This is when you read though the text considering the meaning of the
content and what the author means to convey. In this stage it is important
to keep in mind thee context of the text, i.e. when was it written, for who
was it written, why was it written. These types of background questions
helped build the context for the text, allowing us to actively engage with
the multiple layers of the texts content. The 4th process is reviewing the
text. This is not judging how much you enjoyed the reading of the text but
rather it is ensuring that in the process of actively reading the text you
understood the context, vocabulary used and the key concepts. By going
over these and ensuring that you fully grasp the text you are able to
ensure that you remember the key points. In this stage it is advised that
you write down the key points and concepts and words that you battled to
understand. This also starts the process of thinking deeply about what you
have just read. This leads into the 5th process of review and recording the
key concepts. This is the process where you think about the texts as a
whole and in terms of key concepts. This is where you answer the
questions that you set for yourself before thoroughly reading the text. Here
you stop and pounder that key concepts, how they relate to each other,
how the relate to the context of the text as well as the text itself and lastly
how they relate to you as the reader. In this process of review the content
of the text it important to fill any gaps in your understanding of the text and
its content, this allows for complete absorption of the information and for
assimilation to take place.
