B.P2 Explain how a disability can be viewed as a social construct.

Disability can cause restriction for an an individual (Oxford Dictionaries |
English, 2010). Mental disability is due to psychological cause such as
example anxiety or physical for example wheelchair users. This can cause the
individual unable to perform certain for example an individual with anxiety
won’t be able to talk in front of a crowd. However a wheelchair user has lost
feelings in their legs and can cause the individual not able to to certain task
such as walking. Disablement is the inability to perform daily task without help.
These individuals are not able to care for themselves due to restrictions cause
by their disability (TheFreeDictionary.com, 2006). Discrimination is being
treated differently because of what people classify you as or your status.
People can discriminate against your race, gender, sexual orientation, beliefs
and disability. People who are discriminated against are usually seen as
different or unique this is usually why people discriminates toward these
individuals. Everyone must be treated equally in an health and social setting.
Impairment is when an individual can’t use a body part due to a ‘‘decrease in
strength’’ in a certain part of the body, this differ from person to person as it
could be ‘‘temporary or permanent’’ (TheFreeDictionary.com, 2005). For
example an individual having decrease in hearing. Physical impairment if
when someone is born without a certain body part for example with a loss of
limb.

There are two types of model of disability. Medical model is when an individual
is diagnosed with their disability because what is seen as different about them
(Scope, 2014). This can cause restriction in their lives and make them unable
to do what they could do before (Scope, 2014). For example once a disabled
individual becomes paralysed they are unable to walk again. Some of this
disability can be controlled or treated for example it would be very hard to treat
someone who is paralysed but it would be easier to control through
medication someone who has depression.

Social model is when an individual finds it harder to move around because of
‘‘barriers in society’’, it can be people making assumptions about someone
because of their disability or because a building isn’t fit enough for people with
a disability such as a building not having a ramp for people who are paralysed,

,it is stated that individual ain’t disabled by their disability but by this restrictions
(Scope, 2014). Additionally social model is linked with steve’s case given that
social barriers may cause him restrictions. In the event that steve does go to
work, he wouldn’t be able to do something as he has double vision so he
would be putting more strain on his eye as most jobs involves using a
computer. In another case if he was to be taking a bus to work then he would
have to walk to the bus stop but he may not be able to do this due to his loss
of balance which suggest he can’t walk as well as he used to. This is also
linked to rebecca’s case study as social barriers may make her feel bad about
herself. For example in the event that rebecca wants to go out to the park, this
would mean someone has to take her there as she can’t go by herself
because she is paralysed from below the neck down but can use her arm.
Because rebecca’s house isn’t fit for someone with her disability, it would be a
struggle to get her just out the door. Additionally the apartment she lives in is
on the top floor so this means it requires a lot of effort to get her up the stairs
and this could cause rebecca not wanting to go out more often as she may
think it would be putting struggle on others. Back then disability meant ‘less
able’ and this stopped some people from trying to achieve their best but in the
modern days the idea is changing and it's now been said that disability doesn’t
mean when a person is disabled, they are usually disabled because of
physical barriers placed by the society and this prevents them from achieving
their goals. The social model was created by disabled people who wanted
barriers to be removed so they could have equality and human right so they
are able to have more opportunities.barriers can be eliminated. People and
government have a role in increasing equality and access provided to people
with disabilities.
People with a disability may face social construct. For instance people with
more money will have access to quality health care and education whereas
people with less money may not have access to healthcare and education.
People with less money are also more likely to get into an accident and have a
disability. For instance if someone like rebecca wants to get an electric chair
as it would make it easier for her to move around and allows for her to be
more independent while she is still being safeguarded. However she may not
be able to afford this because her parents have low income. This is why she
lives in a bad area and her house is also not fit for a wheelchair user. Her
parents may not be able to adapt the house as they don’t have enough money
to install this resources. This can also affect steve because he could have
stopped working due to his condition. This means he may not be able to go

,out as much as he used to as he would require different resources to help him
walk more stable. His house will also need to be adopted so it would be more
convenient for him to move around the house. Such as maybe installing a stair
lift if there are stairs in their house so it would be easier for steve to around the
house. If someone has a disability then they have less access to education
and more difficulties accessing healthcare. For instance it would be more
difficult for rebecca to access healthcare this is because people who are
physically impared don’t usually go to university or college as it tends to be
difficult for them to get around and she may also not go to later education as
she may feel dumber because of labelling such as ‘dapt’ which can make her
feel dumber and not want to continue education. Rebecca may find it hard to
access healthcare as she lives in a low income household. Steve may also
find it harder to access healthcare especially since he has probably stopped
working because of his condition which means he may not be able to access
some care service. However some care services are funded by the NHS in the
UK so both rebecca and steve may not need to worry about paying for their
care service.
Gender is another issue of social construct. For instance male experience
more disabilities than female however females are more likely to experience
barrier and discrimination because of their disability and sexism. This means
rebecca has a lot of barriers and may not achieve her goals.
Employment is another issue of social construct because it tends to be harder
for people with disabilities to get employment. Reportedly up to 70% of people
who are disabled are unemployed. This may be because of the barriers they
may face such as if their interview place has no ramp. The individual may also
be unable to work due to being discriminated against and the employees may
also assume the individual can’t work as much as others due to their disability
so therefore the individual may not get much work and may end up quitting the
jobs earlier. For instance it may be harder for rebecca to get a job in the future
as she may qualify but may not be accepted because of her disability. And for
instance is steve was to go back to work then he may be discriminated against
by the employees as they may not think he is capable of doing much due to
his condition.
Family and professional support can reduce the stress and the impact the
disability has on the individual.

If individuals daily activities isn’t supported then they may holdback on going
out often this could lead to isolation and eventually leading to mental illnesses
like depression and anxiety. If rebecca isn’t supported well she may think no
one understand her and may get angry at others especially the one in her
family and can lead to a dysfunctional family situation along with her not
improving in school. Rebecca can be supported in public by buildings being fit
for someone with her disability so having a ramp and elevator so there would
be no worries even if she had to go to the top floor, this way she won’t feel like
she is bothering people, public places can also be adapted to have a instant
wheelchair ramp particularly her apartment. Public transport can also be
adapted so they have a ramp in the bus, research suggest there is a lack of
this in the bus, this could be extremely demotivate people who are paralysed
such as rebecca to take public buses. The disability (access to premises-
buildings) standards 2010 makes it possible so people with disadvantages
such as rebecca won’t feel discouraged by public transport. This legislation
also cover public facilities such as having accessible toilets
(Legislation.gov.au, 2010). This also cover for public place to have a ramp in
case of emergencies such as a fire (Legislation.gov.au, 2010), we know
someone with a disability like rebecca will need help to exit the building. This
also applies to steve as he has trouble balancing so buildings should be fitted
with elevator and not many stairs as this can have less strain his back.
Multiple sclerosis can also have an effect on the arms which means he may
have his driver license taken from him so he should be authorized to have a
freedom pass (Harrow MS Therapy Centre, 2013). But this will depend on the
severity of his multiple sclerosis as some individuals with multiple sclerosis
can still drive.

Risk of rebecca falling will be minimised if she has a ramp an it means it won’t
be as much effort to get her around, reducing the risk of her falling and hitting
her head. Steve risk can be minimised by making text larger for him to read so
he won’t be putting as much effort in reading texts or information. Barriers
