For Nusrat, having a multi-disciplinary team would be extremely beneficial to her health as having the support
of many professionals means both her epilepsy and learning needs are considered in her care, such as
reiterating the need for a Makaton grid at all of her appointments. The disciplinary team would consist of
professionals in both the health sector and social sector; Her GP (general practitioner) and neurologist would
manage her epilepsy, whereas speech therapists and educational psychologists would help her to vocalise
her thoughts, as well as help support her outside of education such as at the local centre. Crucially, by
working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, professionals are able to effectively meet all of Nusrat’s care
needs.
However, by collaboratively supporting Nusrat’s care needs as a team, professionals must ensure that they
communicate frequently and ensure that it is effective. This ensures that there are no duplications of roles
which can waste valuable time and deter Nusrat from seeking help within the hospital and GP surgeries
again.
Furthermore, multi-disciplinary working can be beneficial for Brenda’s treatment as working as part of a team
guarantees each step of her treatment is planned, creating high quality care. By maintaining this high quality
care, vulnerable adults (such as Brenda) are supported and are therefore less likely to require specialised
services for long periods of time. This is specifically beneficial to Brenda has her mental health problems may
mean she might become stressed if change was to occur.
However, if Brenda’s treatment is not planned effectively multi-agency team will not work as effectively as
hoped, leading to a decline in the quality of her treatment, for example Brenda may not take her medication at
the right time. This communication between different health and social care professionals is a key factor of
multi-agency working and if it is not being maintained, issues can occur. As an example, confidentiality can be
breached if the communication is not handled in the right way, which is a strong belief of Brenda as she wants
to be informed of all decisions concerning her care and treatment. If confidentiality is broken she may be
reluctant in the future to go to any health or social care professional leading to a decline in her health.
