Section 1: Professional Development Plan
The fast pace of the world has no doubt necessitated humanity in many ways, but at the
same time, it has posed many novel challenges and threats. One such challenge is the
deterioration in mental health faced by a large percentage of people. This is where my
motivation for pursuing a degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling stems from, along with
my struggles with mental health, which is further discussed in this essay. I am currently pursuing
a master's degree in mental health counseling, tentatively graduating in the spring of 2024. After
completing my master's program, I intend to enroll in a doctoral program while working in the
mental health field, gaining knowledge as a clinical counselor while becoming a clinical
psychologist someday. This professional development plan was written on December 31, 2021.
The essay will discuss my counselor identity statement, my professional development factors,
and the clinical and curriculum training schedule required to complete my degree.
Counselor Identity Statement
On the news and looking at the world around us, we see race, sexual orientation, gender,
and class oppression, which has shown a deterioration in mental health. With the COVID-19
pandemic especially, we see a dramatic decline in mental health, specifically amongst women
and ethnic minorities (Proto & Quintana-Domeque, 2021). I also believe that systematic and
, environmental barriers exist for immigrants seeking mental health care. Poverty and
homelessness create obstacles for those seeking mental healthcare for fear of being turned away
because they cannot afford it. I want to help those in need of mental and behavioral healthcare
who cannot pay for care financially. I firmly believe that mental healthcare should be readily
available to everyone, regardless of class, sexual orientation, race, and gender. Everyone is
human, and we all deserve the same level of equality for mental healthcare and all fundamental
