HSCO 506 INSTRSUCTOR
WEEK 2 DB

Your human services counseling clients will come to you suffering at one level or another.
Our lectures for the last two weeks, and both the course texts, all discuss the concept of
suffering and factors guiding how to counsel those who are suffering. In fact, a careful
reading of the Reading & Study materials indicates numerous concepts and principles that
could apply in counseling those who are hurting.
As you counsel your hurting clients, what you say to them will be guided by your own beliefs
about the role of suffering in human experience (part of your own “theoretical map” as
discussed in the lecture). Considering the numerous points that were made in the course, make
a list of at least 5 concepts (“questions to ask myself as I counsel those who are suffering. . . “)
that you found particularly helpful, insightful, unique, or had not thought about before. What
guidelines would you particularly emphasize as you counsel hurting people? The five concepts
you list should be based on the course materials, so make sure you cite the source you use.
Then consider the following scenario. What suggestions from the course materials would you
want to apply to this hurting client? Why did you choose those suggestions as most important?

Suffering

McMinn (2011) mentioned “People are broken, and broken people are restored in the

context of a healing relationship” (p. 20). Counseling is one of the keys that could demonstrate

the process of redemption to people who are suffering (McMinn, 2011). Suffering will always

be part of our lives because we live a fallen world. For example, Jesus Christ suffered prior to

caring his own cross. We can be comforted and understand the power of God’s love through our

suffering.

Also, McMinn (2011) stated that “when people come to a counselor for help, they should

be given thorough and accurate information about the proposed counseling procedures, should be

informed of alternative treatment approaches, and should sign a written consent form” (p. 24). As

Christian counselors, we are expected to adhere to biblical standards. We must present our clients

, with honesty and most of all have compassion for others as Christ have compassion for us. 1

Thessalonians 5:24 “God will make this happen, for who calls you is faithful.”

Counselors should work to remove needless suffering from their client’s lives. Even

though, this will better equip their clients to cope with the natural suffering that will occur in

their lives. There were at least 5 concept of guidelines that I found helpful and insightful to

emphasize as I counsel hurting clients in my agency. These 5 concepts are:
1. Hospitality
2. Trust
3. Listening
4. Executing a Plan
5. Providing Hope

The first thing I will do is show my hospitality to Jamie when she enters the room.

Simple acts of hospitality can be one of the most powerful techniques in therapeutic dynamics.

By showing my hospitality, Jamie will feel welcome and not unwanted in my office. When a

Christian counselor use the real practice of hospitality, it makes their client feel special,

important, and warmly welcome into your life and not just theirs. The client is willing to

communicate through your words and actions which allows him or her to notice that you are not

visualizing him or her as just as a regular customer. " Above all, keep fervent in your love for

one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without

complaint. As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good

stewards of the manifold grace of God." 1 Peter 4:8-10

Secondly, I will build a trusting relationship with my client Jamie when she enters the

room. Proverbs 3:5 states “trust in the LORD with all of your heart and lean not on your own

understanding.” This will allow Jamie to trust me in the counseling process because she will be
