Energie
Er bestaan verschillende vormen van energie, zoals elektrische energie,
bewegingsenergie, chemische energie, warmte en licht.
Energie kan worden omgezet in één of meerdere energievormen. Dit noem je een
energieomzetting. Bij bijvoorbeeld een benzinemotor wordt benzine verbrand met
als doel de chemische energie uit de benzine om te zetten in bewegingsenergie.
Helaas gaat relatief veel van die chemische energie verloren als warmte (zie figuur
1.1).

Je ziet dat de totale hoeveelheid energie hetzelfde blijft, maar alleen de energievorm
verandert. De totale hoeveelheid energie vóór de omzetting is dus even groot als de
hoeveelheid energie ná de omzetting. Dit wordt de wet van behoud van energie
genoemd.
Energie-effecten bij reacties
In de scheikunde maken we onderscheid tussen reacties waarbij energie vrijkomt
(exotherme reactie) en reacties waarbij energie nodig is (endotherme reactie). Dat
onderscheid noemen we het energie-effect.
Exotherme reactie
Een exotherme reactie is dus een reactie waarbij energie vrijkomt. De
reactieproducten bij een exotherme reactie bevatten minder chemische energie dan
de beginstoffen. Volgens de wet van behoud van energie is de afname aan
chemische energie precies gelijk aan de hoeveelheid energie die is vrijgekomen.
