NURS 225 Diabetic Diet West Coast University Los Angeles Nicole Estigarribia Nurs 225: Nutrition in Health and Disease Topic # 1: Diabetic Diet Part I, Criteria # 1: Identification of Nutrients According to the textbook written by Dudek (2016), the RDAs represent the average daily-recommended intake to meet the nutrient requirements of 97% to 98% of healthy individuals by life stage and gender. This is a tool physicians use in order to determine and adjust nutritional needs with that of a person who also has a health disorder or disease, this will vary person to person. For a person that is diabetic carbohydrate control is extremely important as well as processed foods and sugar intake. As seen in this patient there is a dual diagnosis of diabetes as well as hypertension, which go hand in hand. To meet this patients blood glucose targets, he will need to balance the carbohydrate intake with physical activity and the diabetic medication or insulin prescribed, for this patient he is on metformin and metoprolol. Figure 1 shows examples of a varied of carbohydrates: Foods that contain carbohydrates include • grains, such as bread, noodles, pasta, crackers, cereals, and rice • fruits, such as apples, bananas, berries, mangoes, melons, and oranges • dairy products, such as milk and yogurt • legumes, including dried beans, lentils, and peas • snack foods and sweets, such as cakes, cookies, candy, and other desserts • juices, soft drinks, fruit drinks, sports drinks, and energy drinks that contain sugars • vegetables, especially “starchy” vegetables such as potatoes, corn, and peas
