A. The nursing theory that has influenced my goals and values
The nursing theory that has influenced or affected my values and goals is the theory of
interpersonal relations. It states that nurses can provide adequate care to their patients if they
establish good relationships based on mutual understanding and respect (Hagerty et al., 2017).
The theory has influenced my values by causing me to develop excellent interpersonal skills
necessary for creating good relationships with my patients. Peplau Hildegard developed the
theory of interpersonal relations in 1952.
Nurses apply the interpersonal theory while working with the patients in hospitals during
orientation processes, treatment and diagnosis, and termination. During the orientation process,
the nurses explain to the patients the processes involved in treatment. At this step, the nurses
need to initiate good relationships with the patients to gain their trust. During diagnosis and
treatment, nurses apply interpersonal relations theory to maintain the developed trust with the
patients (Hagerty et al., 2017). In the termination process, the nurses guide the patients on the
care provided and what the patients need to do after being discharged, and the process of
recovery and returning to a healthy life. Establishment of good relationships between the patient
and the nurses promotes collaboration and sharing of critical information that could be necessary
for treatment (Hagerty et al., 2017).
The interpersonal relations theory aligns with my professional practice in that I am required
to meet the patients' different needs by establishing a good relationship with them. Apart from
offering treatment and diagnosis, I am also required to identify the patients' unique needs and
help the patients in the recovery process. For this to be possible, I have to establish a good
relationship with the patients and maintain their trust.
