Social psychologist Irving Janis coined the term groupthink to describe how people often
respond differently in a group context than they might if they were alone. Another interesting
topic of sociological study is the area of deviance and social control. The textbook provides
multiples examples from history where groupthink may have influenced people to participate in
socially deviant behavior that they might have otherwise avoided.
For the initial post, address the one of the following:
Option 1: Share an example from your personal experience (of your own or of someone
you know), or an example from history, where groupthink may have influenced people to
behave or arrive at a decision in a way that many individual members privately might
have avoided or thought unwise.
Option 2: Choose a form of deviance with which you are familiar (not necessarily
something you have done, but something someone you know did). Examine why society
views that behavior as deviant and whether perceptions of that behavior have changed
over time. Determine and explain which theory of deviance you think works best for
understanding the deviant behavior you have chosen to discuss. Remember to be
respectful in light of potentially sensitive topics, and consider what you might be
disclosing as there is no guarantee of privacy.
Option 1:
Since I was a kid, my parents always advised me to be careful who I choose to become friends
with, and the type of people I should or shouldn’t hang around. It was important to my parents to
know all my friends and their family members, and sometimes after meeting them, they advised
against us being friends. I never really understood at the time why they made such a big deal
about my friendships and the type of crowd I socialized with. Now that I am an adult, I see the
bigger picture and understand the type of influence your peers and group of friends have on you.
Our textbook defines groupthink as “the process by which members of a cohesive group arrive at
a decision that many individual members privately believe is unwise”[Ken184]. Alternately,
most of my influence was from primary socialization and was isolated and confined. After high
school Tertiary socialization, which refers to “the process of learning that takes place when
adults move into new settings where they must accept certain ideas or engage in specific

behaviors that are appropriate to that specific setting”[Ken184]. When I moved out of state for
college, ultimately, that’s when my deviant behavior started. I would say my deviant behavior
was primarily because of my sheltered lifestyle growing up, causing me to lash out and be
influenced easily because I was naïve. An article online expressed, “conformity is opposite to
social deviance which implies obedience to the norms that make a person acceptable in a
particular society, group, or social setting. The concept of conformity was also used by Robert
Merton (1957) to refer to acceptance of cultural goals and the legitimate or approved means of
achieving them. In his scheme of adaptations to the goals and means, only conformity to both
indicates non-deviance” [Mon]. Although I understood social control and had a moral compass, I
was drawn to experience new things and create friendships no matter the cost. This was a toxic
mix that caused me to defy my upbringing by experiencing drugs, alcohol, and sex through the
pressures of my peer groups and groupthink. After witnessing my peer’s behaviors and their
