What the census might have called me

In the 1790 Census I would have been categorized as an “all other free person”. I don't

fall in the category of free white female or slaves. In the 1790 there were not many categories or

classifications of race. There were only Free white males, Free white females in one single

category. All other free persons and free colored males and females were different categories and

Slaves in their own category. I am mexican american so my only option would be all other free

person. In 1790 to1840 U.S. Marshals were the ones going house to house completing the

census. Only The Names of household heads appeared on the schedule(Bennett, 2000). There

were different formats of the census forms. So the information was not always correct.

In 2010 the census had developed much better categorizing many different races and not

having to choose a race you are not. Since 1790 many categories have developed six

classifications by race and subclassifications within itself have developed. There is also

Classification by Hispanic ethnicity in its own section. Mexican, Mexican American(chicano),

Puerto Rican in its own row, Cuban in its own row, and any other Hispanic, Latino, Spanish

origin. In 2010 I would have fit in the Mexican, Mexican American(chicano) category. Since

1930 Mexicans were counted as a separate race for the first time(Brown, 2020).

Social Construct

In 1790 the categories for the census were very limited and it also included gender

differences. Free White males and females was a category. Then a different category was all

other free persons and slaves. These last two categories did not have a gender difference. Race

was not acknowledged or determined in the census. You were white, other or slave in the 1790’s.

Being Mexican American was not even mentioned at all and especially being a Mexican

american female. My category is other free persons. This does not include race ethnicity or
