life, raised in the suburbs of Maryland, & how the difference in culture, religious views, &

her childhood & how each related to her current way of thinking. All of these things provided a
type of springboard for her to use, propelling her in a direction which would constitute change &
awareness through the eyes of others. Her educational upbringing & impressions, set forth by
her mother & father, allowed her the ability & showed the importance to explore her own options
in life, & grow to make a difference in nature & in the way people view their surroundings. Dr.
Nadkarni was able to provide her encounters as a child & explain how they related to her
spirituality, her education & job, & how she viewed trees throughout her life, along with many
other living things & the important roles they play on human existence.
This article was very interesting & kept my attention throughout each individual page. I
found it to be very thought stimulating, allowing me to visualize her personal accounts of how
she was raised & how it all led her to learn different things, while developing her thought
process. This article makes me reflect on the influences in my life, how I was raised, & if that
has any effect on the way I view nature. I have not always been tuned into nature & how we
interact with it, but I can remember from an early age that I wasn’t the type of kid to be inside all
the time. Riding my bike, skateboard or whatever I was doing, it never occurred to me that those
things may have added to my lifestyle, but could potentially take away from the surroundings
which we take for granted. Most kids usually don’t think about these things anyway.
I was always interested in science & how things worked, which I believe allowed me to
unlock my potential of working in an engineering type field as a mechanic in the U.S. Navy for
twelve years. Being in the navy subjected me to multiple environmental concerns in how we
handled the potential for pollution. I always asked questions about this, but never received much
of an answer. For example, the oceans hold more than one hundred million tons of plastic &
trash, drifting around (Parker, 2015). Many commercial carriers & government ships add to the
