The causes of eating disorders
Research has shown that eating disorders are the deadliest out of all
mental illnesses. Many eating-disorders are caused by our unhealthy
lifestyles. Our lifestyles nowadays are more likely to develop an eating
disorder than the lifestyles we had in the medieval. That is because we
have social media and fast-food restaurants. Furthermore, stress is
increasing in the last years which also relates to the growing numbers of
people with an eating disorder. Therefore, we have to become aware of
the social media, fast-food and stress risks that can develop an eating
disorder.
Fast-food restaurants are the trendiest places to eat, but they are
unhealthy and can cause eating disorders. All the young adults and
teenagers want to have interaction with friends and most of them use
fast-food restaurant to meet. Fast-food is known for its low prices and fast
delivery. Even though we know the food comes with a huge number of
calories, we see it as nutrition and therefore harmless. Due to the fast-
food places, about 2 billion people are obese. Henceforth, the fast-food
restaurants are an easy way to develop an eating-disorder.
Trying to fit in and adapting yourself so much that you create a
mental illness is a common risk of using social media. First of all, social
media has a big influence in our daily lives. Therefore, it has also a huge
impact on our view of ourselves. On social media you can be who you
want to be and many users are faking themselves to fit in. As a teenager
you believe what you see, so you think every girl or boy has to be like all
those models and bodybuilders. What we see on social media is not reality
but it makes us insecure. This self-doubt is creating a mental illness,
because we try to lose weight or eat unwholesome to gain weight. Hence,
social media makes us insecure and we adapt ourselves that will lead to
an eating disorder.
Eating disorders are caused by events that create a lot of stress in
your life. Research has shown that approximately 70% of students are
coping with a lot of stress and about 53% are on the edge of having a
mental breakdown. When you are dealing with stress, your eating routine
changes. For some this means overeating and for others it means eating
less or nothing at all. Thus, the stress that people nowadays have to cope
with can cause an eating disorder.
To sum up all of the above, eating disorders are a real problem nowadays.
Due to Social media, fast-food brands and the level of stress we have.
Social media makes us feel insecure and lets us think we should do
something about our weight, fast-food seems innocent but this is also an
important cause and the stress we have to deal with nowadays result in a
mental illness for some of us.
