Answers in Terre Blanche et al. (2006) and/or Project 4805 guidelines/or any other

relevant academic source (even Google).

Activity 1:

Name and briefly discuss 5 purposes of a literature review. To help you with this, study
Chapter 2 of your prescribed book (Terre Blanche et al., 2006) on ‘Doing an information
search’, as well as information on the literature review in this and other tutorial letters. If you
cannot find Terre Blanche’s book, use any other source on the purpose of a literature review.
[10 marks]
1. To identify knowledge gaps and to develop a research problem: to be practical, the

identified research problem has to clearly stated with explicit parameters.

2. Identifying a theoretical framework: refining a research problem, includes identifying a

theoretical framework upon which to base the research.

3. To identify issues and variables related to the research topic: Reading literature helps the

researcher to focus on important issues and variables that have a bearing on the

research question.

4. To identify conceptual and operational definitions: it is an important aspect of the research

process to provide clear and unambiguous definitions of key concepts.

5. Executing the search: researchers need to know where to look and search for sources of

information most likely to yield literature about the topic (Terre Blanche, Durrheim, & Painter,

2006, p. 20).

, Activity 2:

Name and briefly discuss 5 qualities of a well-written literature review [10 marks]

Any qualities describing a well-written literature review is fine. Also see Activity 7).

1. It should provide a theoretical framework for the study.

2. Should explain how the problem being investigated fits into a bigger theoretical,

academic and practical framework.

3. Should include relevant theory, historical developments, as well as recent developments

and research.

4. Relevant: It must be relevant to the research problem and research

questions.

5. Well-integrated and written around themes and not authors.

OR

1. Relevance-The literature needs to be relevant to the research problem and topic of study

2. Critical- The literature review needs to have a critical and in-depth comparison of different

approaches and methodologies.

3. Current- the source used in a good literature review need to be current and updated to ensure

relevance

4. Citations-should include reference list and sources must be cited.

5. Extensive-the literature needs to be broad and comprehensive (this received 10 marks)

, Activity 3:

We did a literature search on the topic (moral development during adolescence) and selected a
number of relevant articles for you. You now need to search for five additional, recent (no
older than six year) articles on this topic. Keep your research problem in mind, and focus on
recent (and relevant) research articles on factors influencing moral development in
adolescence. (Remember to include the details of these articles in your reference list in
Assignment 27, the research report). Provide a reference list of your 5 sources by strictly
adhering to the American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines (See PSYHONM
Tutorial Letter 103 point 5.2 for guidelines). Your reference list will be evaluated for the
relevance of the articles, how recent (newly published) they are, their status (peer-reviewed
journal versus an Internet communication) as well as for the accuracy of the references
according to the APA reference system. [20 marks]

We evaluated your 5 articles strictly according to the APA guidelines. Check
for consistency of use of APA. If articles are not recent (thus, 2009 and after
are accepted) and not academic, peer-reviewed articles you received lower
marks. Internet communications and Wikipedia are not peer-reviewed and
are therefore not recognized as peer-reviewed academic articles.

General comments: The purpose of this exercise was to familiarize you with the Unisa

Electronic library. Many students did not make use of this opportunity and Googled articles.

This resulted in various problems such as the following:

a) Some articles were not accessible and students were asked to pay (usually in US$) for

the articles.

b) Articles were not peer-reviewed and of a non-scholarly quality.

If you followed the instructions carefully, you would not have had the above problems, and

you would now have the advantage of knowing how to use the Unisa electronic library to

access articles free of charge. Please do so immediately for the final report. (If you do not

know how to do this, go to the Unisa Library website and play around with it until you are

familiar with the process. At Honours level we expect from our students to know how the E-

library works.)
