PLEASE YOUR OWN WORDS AND

AVOID PLAGIARISM

ACTIVITY 1: Specification of Content
1.1 Define the concept "lesson plan".
- A lesson plan is a teacher’s detailed description of the course of
instruction for a lesson. A daily lesson plan is developed by a teacher
to guide class learning. Details will vary depending on the
preference of the teacher, subject being covered , and the needs of
the students.
1.2 Identify and explain two key concepts from the definition of a lesson
plan.

, - Topic: The topic of the lesson plan consists of what subject you are
focusing on for the duration of the lesson. The topic is typically a
short section of the lesson plan, as you are just listing the subject of
the lesson’s focus.
- Objective: the objective is a crucial part of the lesson plan because it
explicity states the goal students should accomplish at the end of
the lesson..
1.3 Complete Table A below.
Table A: The focus of the lesson

Grade_6
Topic Common fractions
Term 1
Key concept Calculations with fractions
Concepts, skills and number range Addition and subtraction of
common fractions with
denominators which are multiples
of each other.

1.4 Carefully study the details of the topic as it is presented in the CAPS
document and then answer the following questions:
1.4.1 In which terms are common fractions taught in Grade 6?
- Term 1 and term 4
1.4.2 How much time is allocated to the topic ‘common fractions’ in Grade 6?
- 15 hours
1.4.3 How does the key concept 'calculations with fractions’ develop from
Grade 5 to Grade 6? In other words, what is the level of complexity of
this key concept in specified grades?
- In grade 6 learners use their prior knowledge from grade 5 to add
common fractions with the same denominators and recognize,
describe and use the equivalence of division and fractions. Learners

, then learn to add and subtract mixed numbers, Fractions of whole
numbers which result in whole numbers and Solve problems in
contexts involving common fractions, including grouping and
sharing.

ACTIVITY 2: Lesson planning

2.1 What is your understanding of the aim of a lesson?

- The aim of the lesson is a very general statement of what the overall goal
is in a lesson- the intention behind the teaching.

2.2 What is the difference between teacher-centred media resource and
learner-centred media resource?

- In the teacher-centred media resource teacher-centred the information is
dispensed to the learner. An example of a teacher-centred media resource
is when the teacher brings a clock face to the classroom and uses it to
demonstrate, show and tell 24-hour time. In the learner-centred media
resource the learners use the media to build up understanding of the
mathematics being taught. An example of a learner-centred media
resource is when the teacher brings a clock face to class and ask the
learners working in groups to show and tell 24-hour time.

2.3 How could you (as the teacher) assist learners to use a learner-centred
media resource to build up their understanding of ‘addition of common
fractions with the same denominator? Motivate with relevant examples.

-I will demonstrate to the learners how to add common fraction with the
same denominator.
