Summary
Primary Goal
In reading the book, Dr. Crabb’s primary goal is to build a more mature outlook to
Christian Counseling. His focus is in helping the client reach Christian maturity. The goal
of biblical counseling is to promote Christian maturity, to help people enter into a richer
experience of worship and a more effective life of service (Crabb, 1977, p. 29). The goal in
achieving this level of Christian maturity is to effectively integrate Christianity and
psychology.
Development of Problems and Personal Need
Dr. Crabb discusses the ways in which problems come about due to what we want
and desire, our personal needs. As humans, we have a want and desire for security and a
feeling of significance. When we search for security and significance in the wrong places,
we are developing our existence based on our needs instead of trusting in Jesus to give us
security and significance.
Non-believers may find success, have many friends and lots of money and they may
feel as if they have it all at that particular moment in time. Crabb (1977) says, “When the
resources of God are not available because of unbelief, the individual is left with no hope
for genuine significance and security (p. 71). John 10:27-29 (NIV) says:
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal
life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My
Father, who have given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out
of my Father’s hand.”
