A Negative Perception of an
Independent Woman
The description of Alexandra, Sukie and Jane as witches in The
Witches of Eastwick.
The impression of a witch is often negative, but must a witch always be wicked?
Besides being a book, The Witches of Eastwick has also been made into a film. The
three witches from The Witches of Eastwick from John Updike (1984) are
characterized as “good” in the film (1987), but in the book this is the opposite. In the
book the women are defined as evil individuals who misuse their powers for their own
benefit. When comparing the book and film, it shows that the witches in John
Updike’s book The Witches of Eastwick are seen as evil because of their
independence, not because of the fact they are witches. In contrast, it is the other
way around in the film, because........ This comparative essay will explain the
definition of what is good or evil and define what a witch is. Besides that, it is going to
compare the difference between the book and the film by looking at the magical
powers and behaviour of the three witches.
Most definitions say that someone is evil when you are purposely causing harm to
others for your own good. On the other hand, a person is good when they truly care
about the wellbeing of others and never does or thinks something hurtful. Nobody is
a hundred percent good or evil. Everyone sometimes does something bad or has a
bad thought about someone. However, if someone does something wrong, it does
not necessarily mean that person is evil. A person is evil when he or she knows
about their mistake and repeats it on purpose.
Secondly, it is important to define the definition of “witch”. A common definition of
“witch” is “a female with special powers derived from the devil” (free dictionary). But a
quote from the film The Witches of Eastwick (1987) gives us another impression,
where witches are seen as women who are independent of men.
