Assignment 3-Ben and Jerry’s

Pass – Explain the impact of a selected business behaviour, and it's help in a local community, on
its CSR record .

You need to include detailed explanations on the impact on local communities to include
examples:

Support for local projects
The Ben & Jerry’s Foundation funds the Vermont Community Action Team grant program, which was
also created to allow Ben & Jerry’s employees to support organizations in the communities where
they live and work. Ben and Jerry’s are also known for hiring ‘anyone and everyone’ who wants to
work this involves felons. New hires go through an apprenticeship program to learn basic life skills
and job duties, this then leads to an entry level position. (This company is hiring without asking
about candidates’ backgrounds — here’s why, 2021) “We profoundly believe that open hiring, even
though it’s a simple idea and it’s an extraordinary idea, can change the world,” ben and jerry’s
wanting to give ex-felons a chance to be better and helps them get started with a job that provides
an income. This is a huge step for the business world since hiring ex-felons was looked down on by a
lot of big businesses which is why it is so amazing that ben and jerry’s decided to hire people with a
criminal record. An example of this would be 50-year-old Arthur who has been in and out of prison
since 16 meaning his criminal record stopped him from getting a job since a lot of people judge you
by your past and the mistakes you have done now Arthur is able to make a living and be
independent. With this the question rises if its safe to work there and if anyone has ever been
violent to which ben and jerry’s responded by saying ‘We’ve never witnessed that’ meaning that the
work place is in no way dangerous. In a study of military members, experts found out that among
1.3 million ex-felons in the military with a criminal record, often were promoted faster to higher
ranks. This shows that they are not bad employees and try even harder to be there than anyone
else.

Staff volunteering in the community
Going back to ‘The Ben & Jerry’s Foundation’ and their partnership with the ‘Vermont Community
Action Team’ where each year Ben and Jerry’s employees work together on several large-scale
community service projects that the CATs organize, these include things like clean, build, and refresh
things that improve the quality of life for the local communities. Some of the volunteering
opportunities they offer is Barre Area Senior Centre, Camp Exclamation Point which is a camp for
Vermont children from migrant families who work seasonal jobs in the agriculture, and Fairfield
Farmers Market Online which gives the community access to high quality, healthy food being
prepared by local farmers. This will then encourage investments in the community supporting the
local economy. (Ben & Jerry's , 2021)

Provision of education and training opportunities

, A good example for provision of education and training opportunities would be Ben & Jerry’s Ice
Academy, they have teamed up with The Entrepreneurial Refugee Network who are a group of social
activists – to see how they could help them in getting people who arrived as refuges back into
business and solving barriers they will have to overtake in the job market. The ice academy
programme is a model which works with people to teach them about business and entrepreneurship
training as well as helping them out to find part time jobs and mentoring them through their
journeys. Ice Academy’s goal is’ to provide the tools, opportunities and resources to help them
succeed here and across Europe’ . In 2020 the academy has supported 175 entrepreneurs across
Europe.
Job creation for local workers
Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Half-Baked ice creams are baked at Greyson Bakery
which is an enterprise that dedicated to providing jobs for the unemployed. (9 Reasons To Love Ben
& Jerry's That Have Nothing To Do With Ice Cream, 2020) Greyston has been opened for over 38
years, they provide people with jobs that might get rejected elsewhere, they give potential
employees a chance to get a job through Open Hiring where no resumes, no background checks, no
interviews needed. With this they also offer taking steps towards sufficiency, workforce
development and community wellness support to help the local communities. This is why it is so
good that Ben and Jerry’s is doing their best to choose the right suppliers as a lot of people would
focus on how sustainable their companies are by themselves but won’t focus on their suppliers and
where they get their resources from. (BUILDING STRONGER COMMUNITIES, ONE PERSON AND ONE
JOB AT A TIME., 2021)

Support for local charities
This goes back to the Community Action Team since they have made grants to local charities like
cancer research and make a wish, overall, they have made grants totalling $180,500 to 152
organizations which is a big help especially for the smaller charities and events since they are the
ones getting the least recognition and the least support because of their size.

Why do they support local communities?
Ben and Jerry’s support local communities to improve the systems under which refugees and
migrants are supported to settle in the UK and can take a full and active role with the society. The
Foundation recognises that the voices of those most affected by the issues are best placed to
identify and tackle systematic constraints and mobilise to create real lasting change. Therefore, Ben
and Jerrys find it so important to support local communities since they can see the difference that
they have made as they are helping people to get a second chance in life and start over. Another
reason that Ben and Jerrys does what they do is to change perceptions within the public
consciousness, they fund organisations that challenge negative perceptions around the role of
refugees, asylum seekers and migrants with society as well as those that empower the local
communities to provide a positive and inclusive welcome. This is not only good for the refugees but
also the community since more open-minded communities are the happier ones and the ones with
the most creativity and acceptance.

How effective is their support in the local communities?
Ben and Jerry’s are one of the first, major companies that have a fully integrated CSR into its
business plan, they support many local and international charities. Fully integrating the CSR business
